Help reading notes

Recommended Posts

I wonder, can someone help me to decipher the remarks for the baptism of Arne Knudsen.  I believe the first line states he was "home-baptised" in Kristiansand.  The rest is unclear.

I wonder if it contains any clues to the identity of Arne's father, Stuert Karl Knudsen.  Here is the "Ministerialbok" version of the record.  The comments are slightly different.

If he was baptized in Kristiansand, I think it must be at the home of Karl Knudsen.  Arne's mother, Johanne Nilsine Fjogstad, resided in Stavanger in 1900 and 1910.  She emigrated to the USA in 1911 and did not take Arne with her.

I would appreciate any assistance.

Hilsen

Patricia

Thank you Åsbjørg!  Can I ask you to take a look at the remarks on the first link I provided?  There is more information there.

This is a bit confusing.  Any idea why there would be a second baptism 4 months after he was born, and quite a distance away?

Arne is "hjemmedøpt" at the hospital one day old.

I am not sure about the names. Baptized by Sogneprest (Brockmann?). Witnesses Direktør (Petr??) and Over(something) Søster Annie (?)

(Søster = nurse)

I think "hjemmedåp" should always be confirmed in chuch if the baby survived

Thank you again, Åsbjørg!  I guess "hjemmedøpt" just means not in a church.  The dates are confusing though.  If he was baptized in the hospital in Kristiansand at age 1 day...  The Stavanger Ministerialbok shows he was born Aug 12.  Baptized Aug 13, and again on Dec 6.  I had assumed the Dec 6 baptism happened in Kristiansand.  But now, I think it must be the reverse. Baptized in Kristiansand on Aug 13 and again in Stavanger on Dec 6.  What do you think?

Too bad about the notes.  I had hoped there would be clues there to the father's identity.  :(

One more entry:  Here is the record of his birth in Kristiansand:

If someone (Åsbjørg??) could take a look at the remarks.  I believe it is the same information regarding the priest/witness/nurse.  Is there anything there that is a clue to the identity of Karl Knudsen (the father)?

Eg asylum was a psychiatric hospital. http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eg_sykehus

The hospital's 2nd director was Lars Hannibal Sommerfeldt Stout Platou (1882–1920), so I think he was the witness together with perhaps overvogter (head guard), nurse Annie (maybe head matron?).

Here we clearly can see that it was director Platou.

Hjemmedøpt av stiftspresten. Vidner: Direktør Platou og søster Annie. Sgpr. (sognepresten i Stav(anger) under(rettet) 20/1, [sks. paa?] denne 5/12 om at hj(emme(d(åpen) er stadfestet og barnet indført med nummer der.

'Home' baptized by the Dean. Witnesses: Direktør Platou and nurse Annie. The vicar in Stavanger notified 20/1 .... that the baptism is confirmed and the child is written in with number there.

As we can see, there is no number before this entry here i Kristiansand.

I don't think giving birth out of wedlock was sufficient criteria for being admitted to this hospital.

If she was a patient at Eg, there may perhaps still exist a journal? She could perhaps also have been working here?

373 persons lived at Eg asylum i 1900:

Hei Anne-Lise

This is interesting.  I am not aware of the mother (Johanne Nilsine Abrahamsdtr Fjogstad) working in the healthcare field or living outside of Stavanger.  In 1900, Johanne is 17.  She is "fosterdatter" living with her mors mor (in Stavanger).   In 1910, she is living at Hjelmelandsgate 34 (Stavanger).  Her occupation is "pakkerske-hermetikf."

When you say there may be journals?  What do you mean?

Thank you again, Anne-Lise!  If I wanted to access these archives (and I don't know if I do), would I have to go to the hospital, or are they available elsewhere?  It has been over 100 years since this birth (1908).

Perhaps (in the future) it will be possible to get answers here in this forum?: http://forum.arkivverket.no/forum/42-sp%C3%B8r-helsearkivet/

The Health Archive is still under construction, as I understand. Maybe you can post questions about patient files from Eg asylum

in the forum Spør (Ask) Statsarkivet i Stavanger: http://forum.arkivverket.no/forum/32-spoer-statsarkivet-i-stavanger/

I think they prefer to answer questions regarding sensitive patient information in an e-mail instead of in an open forum.

http://www.arkivverket.no/arkivverket/Arkivverket/Stavanger

Statsarkivet i Kristiansand may (after checking Arkivportalen) be the correct archive to ask: http://www.arkivverket.no/arkivverket/Arkivverket/Kristiansand

.
