Haagen Back

I am looking for information about my great-great Grandfather, Haagen Back, who was born in about 1831.  I have found a listing on the Norwegian archives here, http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01038310008367, which says there was a Haagen Back (maybe the same one?) who was born in Reendalen in 1831, and was a handelsmand.  I am interested in any information about him, including when he would have immigrated to the US (around 1872 I believe, winding up in Norwegian Grove, Minnesota)

This is really interesting! Perhaps this should have been posted in the User's forum instead. I really hope someone who specialize in Rendalen genealogy sees your posting. :)

 

As another user I therefore have some thoughts on this questions.

 

Firstly: Did you notice the maid Karen Eriksdatter Back living in this houshold? Just in case she is related to Haagen, I searched for her and I think I have forund her baptism in Rendalen. She is born 1843-01-08: http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/kb/dp/person/pd00000005275751

 

These parents, Erik Olsen and Kari Haagensdatter Nedre Bakken have more children:

Karen in 1843 and

Halvor and Karen may not be Haagen's siblings, but perhaps related in some other way.

 

 

You see, it is a very interesting family Haagen Back lives with in Trondheim. In this houshold we find the father http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingvald_Undset and grandparents of Sigrid Undset, the famous Norwegian author who in 1928 was awarded the Nobel Price in litterature. http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigrid_Undset

 

Halvor (Halvorsen) Undset's mother (who is Maren Haagensdatter 1798-1860) comes from Nedre Bakken Undset, so it will be interesting to find out if your Haagen is related to the family he is living with in 1865.

 

My (and my mother's) maternal ancestors also comes from this valley, (and Halvor Undset was my fourth grandfather's third cousin),  so I really hope someone with more knowledge than I reads this.

Maren Haagensdatter b. 1798 and Kari Haagensdatter b. 1810 are sisters, daughters of Haagen Jonsen (1772-1854) and Siri Eriksdatter Søndre Bjøntegaard (1772-1858)  [page 288 in Jacob Breda Bull: Øvre Rendalen - Gårdenes og slektens historie, published in 1940]

 

Kari Haagensdatter married Erik Olsen 'Vinterbrækken' b. 1810 in 1830.

Haagen Back was therefore staying with his first cousin Halvor Undset and his family in Trondheim. :)

had these children, all of them born at Bakken Undset:

Erik Olsen was the son of Ola Eriksen Søndre Bjønngaard (1774-1864) and Sigrid Halvorsdatter Vinterbrækken (1780-1831)
Erik's son, Halvor E. Back, pioneer, building contractor, is mentioned in Martin Ulvestads book: Nordmændene i Ameica / Norwegians in America * (page 530)  living in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. His son Carl Back, lawyer since 1904, was living in Minot, North Dakota.

Hei Grethe!VERY interesting!!!One of the censuses I looked at (can't remember which...might have been 1910, said that Karen immigrated 1868 or 1869...I know the 1900 census had a different immigration year for her)...mvh Patty

I am trying to locate the family members whereabouts prior to their emigration, because Haagen doesn't come up in emigrant searches.

Absolutt interesting to read and follow this tread. I come out from the same folks myself, a sister of Maren Haagensen (1798-1860), the mother of your Haagen. Have you come any further in your search and findings? Maybe we have something in common, some info for sharing?

I believe I have identified Haagen's parents, Erik Olsen and Kari Haagensdatter, both of whom appear to have gotten to the US, and are buried in Minnesota. 

 

I visited Norway in 2017, and went to several farms in Rendalen that I think were connected to Haagen.  It was very interesting. 

It appears Haagen and his family left for the US from Trondheim in about 1866-67.

Thank you for replying Tom, always a bit uncertaines when it has been some years without activity in a tread :) - We have also shared som info on email recently, since i also used the email you had written in your first posting because it has been 5-6 years since the last posting. And absolutelly, this is Your Back, from Rendalen. -And his parents who emigrated some years later. I have seen their gravestones on findagrave.com. If there is no one asking for a public knowledge exchange, we can keep our next exchange in  our private email.
