My grandmother had this letter translated years ago, however I believe it was translated incorrectly based on facts (numbers in the letter)  and the name Amund Lien on the letter, who I believe Engebrit Tollefson purchased a ticket for. If someone could help I would be forever grateful. I also hope I am uploading this right.

Thank you!

Kate

Not all the text is easy to read...

Something like this:

"Meh(??) 25th 1885

Ven E.!

Bilet er i dag afsendt til

til Amund A Lien, Tolgen

Østerdalen Norway.

Herved sendes $ 13.00 som

Bilag paa bilettene. - Jeg

mottog for den bank Bilæt $41.25

Bilæten(-e?) sendt til Norge $27.50

Herved  ..?...    13.00

Registrering af Brev, Porto osv.  .75

                  $41.25

Prisene varierer nu nesten

hver dag, en dag op og den anden

ned; dag .??..tydelig.

Venligst

P.O. Jalberg"   [may be "P.A."  and/or "Falberg" - there is little to compare with]

Which means ...:

"Meh(??)"  - does not give any meaning to me. I would expect either a month or a placename (but then the month misses in the date)

Friend E.!

Ticket is today sent to

to Amund A Lien, Tolgen  ["til" (to) is repeated]

Østerdalen Norway.

Hereby is being sent  $ 13.00 as

attachment at the tickets. - I

recieved for that bank ticket $41.25  [literally... - I am not sure about the meaning]

Ticket(s?) sent to Norway $27.50   [unclear -e, which indicates plural if it is there]

Hereby ..?...    13.00

Registration of letter, postage fee etc.  .75

                  $41.25  [the sum]

The prices varies now almost

every day, one day up and the next

down; day ...??....

With friendliness

P.O. Jalberg

......

Perhaps someone else will try the "??"....

I agree with most of what Ivar wrote, but I disagree with a couple of things:

"Meh(??) 25th 1885                             ... Mch 25th (March 25th)

Ven E.!

Bilet er i dag afsendt til                          ... afsendt tit

til Amund A Lien, Tolgen

Østerdalen Norway.

Herved sendes $ 13.00 som

Bilag paa bilettene. - Jeg                        ...biletterne

mottog for den bank Bilæt $41                ...modtog ... 41.25

Bilæten(-e?) sendt til Norge $27.50

Herved  ..?...    13.00

Registrering af Brev, Porto osv.  .75

                  $41.25

Prisene varierer nu nesten

hver dag, en dag op og den anden

ned; dag .??..tydelig.                             ... dog ubetydelig

Some further suggestions:

". . . den Gamle Bilæt" ?  (the Old Ticket)

". . . Bilæt nu sendt til Norge" ? . . . (Ticket now sent to Norway)

". . . Herved Konteret" ? 13   (Hereby Posted [as in connected to an accounting])

As said - only suggestions.

All the best

Ok, I can see that the fragmentary suggestions in my previous post might appear a bit confusing.

So I'll take a deep breath, and give the entire letter a try.

Being a frequent seeker of help on this forum, I consider myself rather brave at the moment . .

Well.

In doing this I'll boldly include the skilful interpretations done by previous posters.

Ok. Down to business:

Interpretation of the original norwegian text:

And (drumroll) my tentative translation, (comments in Italic) kind of word-by-word, and therefore maybe slightly incomprehensible. I beg forgiveness in advance:

Friend E!

Ticket is today sent often

(tit = often in english. A strange and really illogical use of this arcaic norwegian/ldanish word. Don't know what to make of it. Moreover - it would correctly be spelled - "tidt"- with a "d." But as long as it's not at all crucial to the letter . . . I leave it.)
