John Jacobsen, from Hole, died in Civil war USA

Recommended Posts

I am helping to search for a John Jacobsen, from Hole, Buskerud.  I found a John Jacobsen, born 07

Jan. 1831, baptized 13 Feb. 1831 in Hole, Buskerud Norway, son of Jacob Tronsen and Mari Jensdtr.

The name Tron was also given to me as a brother ????  Part of the family may have lived in  Pelican

Rapids, Minnesota.  As the Civil War was early in the 1860's, the family must have emigrated early.  Would you have any ideas of help?  John served in the Civil War and died in the south.

From the US Registers of Deaths of Volunteers 1861-1865, I have found this:

Jacobson, John

Date of death:  July 20, 1864

Place of death:  Atlanta Ga.

Killed in action                     from Ancestory.com

From Find a grave.com     John Jacobson death Jul 20, 1864; burial  Marietta National Cemetery , Ga.

Any comment would be appreciated.

His parents married June 25th 1830 (no 12, left page):

Both records show that his mother's patronymic was Jons-/Johnsdatter, not Jensdatter. So I guess John was named after his maternal grandfather.

Their address was Hurumseiet (i.e. a croft or smallhold on the land of the Hurum Farm). The modern spelling is Hårum. Jacob was a widower.

John isn't mentioned in the local history book, the Holeboka. This is what is written about his family in Vol. 2, p. 360-61:

"In 1801 there lived crofters at nine crofts under the Hårum Farms, but we don't know which Family inhabited each croft:

* Crofter with land and shoemaker Tron Gulbrandsen (59) and wife Anne Jacobsdatter (56). They had one lodger, Lisbeth Olsdatter (40, lived of handwork), and of their children only Jakob (21, national Soldier) lived with them. We know these children: Gulbrand (born 1777), Jakob (born 1780), Ambjørg (bapt. 1782, died as a child), Eli (bapt. 1784), stillborn girl (born 1787), Ambjørg (1788-1792). Tron Gulbrandsen died i 1817 as a "legdslem" (i.e. he had come on the parish), and then his was stated to have reached the age of 72.

His son Jakob Tronsen (1780-1832) seems to have succeeded his father at this croft. In 1803 he married Anne Eriksdatter Johnsrudeie of Norderhov, and they got at least seven children: Gulbrand (born 1803), Karen (born 1806), Gunhild (born 1809), Anne Maria (born 1812), Tron (born 1815), Anders (born 1818) and Marte Marie (1822-1831). In addition Jabob was mentioned as the father of two illegitimate children in 1802 and 1815 (see below). Anne Eriksdatter died before 1830, and Jakob remarried Maria Johansdatter (who lived at Herøya). He died in 1832, age 52."

"... the man was, however, prevented ..."
"In 1802 Jakob Tronsen Hårumseie, a crofter's son, was stated as the father of a baby girl, Else (born 1802), with Johanne Kristoffersdatter (born 1773), a maid at the Søgarden Hårum (i.e. the Southern Hårum Farm). In connection with this child's baptism it's quoted in the Church records that "These intend to marry each other at once, the man was, however, prevented from doing so". It's hardly a coincidence that Jakob stayed away: The next year he married Anne Eriksdatter of Johnsrud-eie, Norderhov, who until her Death about 1830 gave birth to at least seven of his children. That he still had a good eye for his old flame at Søgarden, is shown by the fact that when Johanne Kristoffersdatter in 1815 again carried at child for baptism (a baby boy, Kristoffer), "married man Jakob Tronsen Hårumeie once more was atated as the father!"

When she married in 1830 Mari was stated to be of Storøyeiet. Most likely she is mentioned in Holeboka Vol. 1, p. 290:

Gulsplassen u. Storøya:
"Gulsplassen must have been one of the better crofts on the land of the Storøya Farm. Just Southwest of Hellebergrønningen, with a magnificent view to the north; today there are only the house fundations remain as a memory that this was the location of a croft.
In 1805 a probate registration took place at Gulsplassen u. Storøya after Petronelle Alvsdatter. She survived by the widower John Isaksen and the children Marie (5 1/2) and Alf (2 1/2). The estate net value was 118 Thaler - they were affluent crofters!"

I'm unable to find John and Petronelle in the Census of 1801. Here are, however, perhaps Johns parents and siblings: https://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01058269000183
