Raymond W. Hagenswold, 414 West Scott of Sherman, died at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 4, 1984, at Medical Plaza Hospital in Sherman.

Burial and graveside services were held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 8th, at Oakwood Cemetery Honey Grove under the direction of Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home. The Rev. Larry W. Craig officiated.

Mr. Hagenswold was born at Brooklyn, New York, September 13, 1914, the son of Fredrick Hagenswold and Anna Nelson. 

He was married August 7, 1944, at San Francisco, Ca. to Martha Alice Shelton. 

He was a member of the Catholic faith, a veteran of World War II, having fought in the South Pacific, a member of the Elks in Sherman and a member of the American Legion in Sherman. He was self-employed as a salesman for Ray's Sales Co.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Martha Hagenswold of Sherman; three sons, Raymond F. Hagenswold of Whitewright, Walter Bruce Hagenswold of USMC Station in Japan and Paul D. Hagenswold of Sherman; one daughter, Mrs. Martha Jane Medina of League City; and 8 grandchildren.

Mike Courtney of the First Baptist Church in Tom Bean. Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Hagenswold was born in Windom, Texas December 2, 1924, a daughter of Willie Green Shelton and Ruby Mae Avery.  She married Raymond W. Hagenswold on August 7, 1944 in San Francisco, California.  She was a homemaker and a Baptist. Survivors include three sons, Raymond F. Hagenswold of Whitewright, Walter B. Hagenswold of Plano and Paul D. Kristofersen.  Ho var dotter av målarsvein Karl Emanuel Nilsson Kristoffersen i Christiania, opphavleg frå Holmestrand, og kona Anna Christine Magnusdotter frå Arvika i Värmland, Sverige, og f. i Christiania 5.6.1881.  Ho utvandra til Amerika i

     Frederick var pianostemmar («piano polisher») og budde først i Boston, Mass. og deretter i Philadelphia, Penn., men etter ein kort tur attende til Christiania utvandra han og Anna hausten 1900 på ny til Amerika, og dei slo seg snart etter ned i Brooklyn, Kings Co., N.Y. der Anna d. 10.1.1925.  Frederick Hagenswold d.

     Han fekk i alt fire søner, som alle var frå siste ekteskapet.

Karl August, kjend som Carl Hansson Knudsen, f. i Bergen 10.4.1867, utvandra til Amerika i 1889 og gifte seg i Brooklyn, N.Y. 3.4.1895 med Olga Christiane Christiansdotter Fjeld frå Christiania (Oslo).  Ho var dotter av bybud Christian Olson Fjeld i Christiania, opphavleg frå Fjell i Hole, og kona Otilie Margrethe Olsdotter Ravnaas frå Drammen og f. i Christiania 19.7.1871, men utvandra til Amerika i 1891.  Carl arbeidde som pianostemmar («piano polisher»), og etter ei tid attende i Christiania utvandra han og Olga i 1901 på ny til Amerika.  Dei busette seg då først i Brooklyn, Kings Co., N.Y., men flytte kring 1908 til Chicago, Cook Co., Ill.

Det ligg mange utfordringar i denne huslyden, ikkje minst dei to første ekteskapi til Frederick Hagenswold i Amerika, og eg kan ikkje sjå nokon dokumentasjon for at han utvandra so tidleg som i 1879...

 

Alt vert nok ikkje like enkelt å finna svar på, men eg vil gjerne få takka for framifrå bistand til å komplettera denne biografien!

Erik Fredrik's  son of 2nd marriage was living with his mom (presumably separated from Fredrick) in Mass. in 1900 (see U.S. Census). He went by the name Dudley Von Haugenswoll.

This was exciting news!

 

I find Dudley Von Haugenswald in the WW1draft records residing 1917 at Duluth, St. Louis Co., MN working as a clerk: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-G18K-3HD

 

but I fail to find him in any later records...

 

However, I do find his mother Ellen Mary nee Hurst married a 2nd time at Fitchburg, MA July 30, 1900 to a widowed salesman named William E. Houghton from Worcester, MA: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-XKGQ-KBL

 

They lived in Boston, MA in 1920: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9RX5-Z2V

 

but it appears William died at Worcester, MA in either 1924 or 1927.  I find Ellen Houghton died at Worcester, MA in 1951.

 

Ellen was apparently born on a farm at Gedney Hill, Lincolnshire, England in June of 1868.

Military Service Records, 1921-1925 Lists and information gathered about service people of St. Louis County. Submission of a record to the Commission was voluntary and not all people who served are represented in this collection. The service records consist of a four-page form distributed by the Commission, but family respondents often augmented that record with photographs, letters, and obituaries. The commission sought records for all servicemen who had lived in St. Louis County at the beginning of the World War I, so many records exist for "non-residents" living in the county including Canadians.
