Help in English please

I am in USA in the state of California. 

I have found out that I have relatives that came to the USA from Bergen Norway. 

I have done most of my research on familysearch.org starting with a paper handed down from my Mother's Mother.

I am writing this from my phone right now so I don't have access to the files, however I hope that someone they can help me with the translation English to Norwegian. 

So. My first question is can somebody there work with me not know your language?

Many of the members of this forum are fully capable of helping you translating from Norwegian to English (not "help me with the translation English to Norwegian"?).

However - don't expect help with extensive papers.

Hi Toni

You should try "Google translate" which translates for free texts between many languages.

The translation is never completely perfect, but you will get the meaning.

Write your text in Norwegian on a PC and then let the ap translate to English. Look it up!

Ok so here goes.

On the attached document, at the top of the page it is written that they believed they immigrated around 1840 give or take some years I believe it to be closer to be between between 1849 and 1852. Whom ever came may have came with some cousins also mentioned near the bottom of the attached paper,  family name Paasche.

The following link is from 1870 Massachusetts USA ( https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-XC59-3P5?i=13&amp;cc=1438024 ) 

on page 14 you will find Some names of Annie, Emma and Oscar which kind of match with some of the names at the top of my family paper. The Oscar Pearson is with that same family... also from Norway.  a little bit away from them is Charles, Dorothy and their Daughter Minnie. In the same Census record further back on page 59 is The Paasche Family and the wife's maiden name is Neisen.  You will also note the cousin's names match up.Ida Emma and Minta.

I am trying to Locate exactly when and where my family came from in Norway. I am also curious as to why they may have left, what type of living they may have had there and if I have any relatives still there?  Also, Is there by chance there is any records still around that may have any photos?

I hope this is enough information to start with.

First off the easy one:

 

The Alexander B. Paasche shown at familysearch.org as born in 1828 is Alexander Bernt Paasche, age 18 when he received his exit permit in Bergen 30 April 1845 (see record # 32 at http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&amp;sidenr=1&amp;filnamn=passprot&amp;gardpostnr=32&amp;merk=32#ovre). He was living in Hosanger clerical district, just to the northwest of Bergen. Nobody else who seems related to you got an exit permit in 1845, as far as I can tell.

 

Alexander was the illegitimate child of Bernt Paasche and Anna Berntine Olsen (both unmarried), born 3 March 1827 and baptised 12 March 1827 at Bergen Cathedral ("Domkirke"). Baptismal entry is at https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070306670358 (entry 48) - this is all in Norwegian and old handwriting, so probably not much use for you, but may help the others answering your questions.

 

Of course the family document does not say that it was he who was related to you - rather, it is his children who were cousins to your ancestors, so it may be Alexander's wife Anna Nielsen (whom he married in Massachusetts) who was related to your family (which would make sense, as Oscar Pearson was boarding with a bunch of Nielsens in the 1870 Massachusetts census).

I have found another record for Dorothea in Massachusetts. Take a look at line 36 of left-hand side at  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-DBG9-KJ2?i=6&cc=1459985. This is from Massachusetts Census 1855 and shows Dorothy Perey, age 15 (i.e., born c. 1840) living in North Chelmsford with Neil F. Nelson (born c. 1819), his wife Amelia Nelson (born c. 1819), and their two children Amelia (born Massachusetts c. 1853) and Ann (born Massachusetts c. 1855) - in other words, exactly the same family with whom Oscar Pearson was living in 1870.

 

This Neil F. Nelson is identified in familysearch.org as Neal Thomas Nelson (see https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LRMG-VH9). A Niels Thomas Nielsen from Bergen, age 33 (born c. 1818), got his exit pass from Bergen on 28 April 1851 (see http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&amp;sidenr=1&amp;filnamn=passprot&amp;gardpostnr=310&amp;merk=310#ovre).

 

I suspect this Niels Thomas Nielsen might be a brother to Alexander Paasche's wife Anna Nielsen (born c. 1824) and perhaps to Dorothy's mother.

Niels Thomas Nielsen was born 20 January 1818 to Niels Peter Johan Nielsen and his wife Anne Marie Thomasdatter, and was baptised 15 February 1818 at Bergen's Church of the Cross ("Korskirke"). See https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NHHX-Q6J.

 

The mother, using married name Anne Marie Nielsen, emigrated in 1851, at the same time as Niels Thomas Nielsen. At this time she was 64 years old (i.e., born c. 1787). See entries 308 and 310 at http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&amp;sidenr=1&amp;filnamn=passprot&amp;gardpostnr=308&amp;merk=308#ovre.

 

His sister Anna Margrethe Nielsen was born 10 January 1823 to the same parents, and was baptised 24 January 1823 in the same church. See https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N42D-3Q1. She emigrated in 1849, two years before her brother Niels. See entry 205 at http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&amp;sidenr=1&amp;filnamn=passprot&amp;gardpostnr=205&amp;merk=205#ovre.

 

The same parents had another daughter Petriche Wittrup Nielsdatter, born 2 January 1816 and baptised 14 January 1816 at the same church. see https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NH7G-SVY. She emigrated in 1851 along with her mother and her brother Niels, and had with her 3 under-age children (not yet confirmed - meaning they were under the age of about 15, which is when Lutherans back then were confirmed). See entry 309 at http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&amp;sidenr=1&amp;filnamn=passprot&amp;gardpostnr=308&amp;merk=308#ovre.

 

One of Petriche's children was Dorthea Christine Judithe, born 20 November 1839 to Olaii Pedersen (which became Eli Pearson in America) and Petriche Nielsen, and baptised 13 December 1839 at Bergen's Cathedral ("Domkirke). See https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N428-JYF. This is your Dorothy Pearson.

 

Among the other children born to them are:

1. Hans Peter, born 12 October 1836 to Olaii Peersen and Petriche Nielsen (see https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N428-CG6). He made his way to Massachusetts, leaving Bergen in 1857

2. Niels Peter Johan, born 31 October 1842 to Olai Peersen and Petricke Wetrup Nielsen (see https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NW4W-J2K). Must have died early

3. Alfried Olai, born 13 February 1844 to Olai Peersen and Petriche Nielsen (see https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NW4W-YVL). Must have died early

4. Oscar Julius, born 23 August 1846 to Olai Piersen and Petriche Wittrup (see https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NW44-HMR). This is your Oscar Pearson.

5. Anna Marie, born 14 June 1849 to Olai Persen and Petriche Witrop (see https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NW4C-M8G). This is your Annie Pearson.

 

So the three children Petriche took with her in 1851 were Dorthea, Oscar, and Anna.

 

In the baptismal records, Olai Pedersen is variously described as a "kjører" (driver), "vognmand" (haulier), and "dagløner" (day laborer). Seems like he was what in English would generally be called a teamster.

Petriche Nielsen's husband Ole Pedersen must have died around 1850, because after Petriche emigrated in 1851 (along with her mother, her brother, and three of her children), she remarried in Massachusetts.

 

Specifically, on 11 July 1854 in Chelmsford, Petreka Pearson, age 34 (four years too young), married John A. Collier, age 25. See https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N4MR-XJN

 

In the 1855 Massachusetts census she is listed in Chelmsford as Petreche Collier, age 35 (four years too young), married to John Collier, age 26, iron founder from Germany, and with children D. P., age 15 (Dorothy? - double-listed, as she is also listed in North Chelmsford with her uncle Niels Nielsen), Oscar, age 8, and Anna, age 6. In the 1865 Massachusetts census she is listed in Chelmsford as Maria Collier, age 49 (correct), from Norway, married to John A. Collier, age 42, soldier from Germany, and with children Anna Maria Piersons, age 15, Oscar Julius Piersons, age 18 (soldier), and Doritha C. Warden, age 25 (along with Charles H. John Collier was dead by 1890, at which point Beatrice Collier received a widow's pension based on his Civil War service (see http://(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KD57-9H7). Beatrice Collier, born 1816, died in Chelmsford 11 April 1907 (see https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N49M-KDX).

 

 

I see no evidence in the record so far for the two sisters of Dorothea Pearson listed as Amelia and Drusilla in your grandmother's notes.

Thank you so so much for all of your answers and help.  On those links that you sent that are in Norwegian is there any photo evidence attached to the passports that were issued or not at that date in time?  

As far as Amelia and Drusilla, I know Amelia married a man last name Duncan, and Drusilla married a man last name Temple, both in  Massachusetts. 

I know it is a lot to ask, would there be any way to e mail  copy of the documents to me at tmpeaches@aol.com in the original Norwegian and also in English?
