I am sorry.  I am trying to figure out what things say to do on this website and it has been a challenge even though i can translate the subtitles using a translation method.  

 

I was given the links from another person how to post things and that is what i did.  Again, I am sorry for posting things several times if that is what I have done.

 

If you are looking at the jail records of Karl Johan Karlsen  (This is my 2 x's great grandfather) I would like to know what he has been charged with.  His wife has passed away and children have been sent to various farms.  I think he has been using alcohol to medicate but I really have no idea what any of it says in Norwegian.  So, to make this clear...any information for the arrest would be helpful.

I will make a start at this - my Norwegian is not strong enough to figure this all out, so I hope some of the Norwegians on this board will fill in the gaps.

 

This is his prison record for 28 Nov 1908. As you may have already figured out, he was born 26 Nov 1855 (53 years old) in Kristiania (now Oslo), legitimate (i.e., his parents were married to each other), his father Sjauer [?] Karl Karlsen died c. 1881, his mother Marte (born Nielsen) died c. 1890, and they were neither divorced nor separated. Karl Johan received his confirmation in 1871 in Kristiania (Gamle Aker parish) and is now a widower with 1 legitimate child (and no illegitimate ones). He lives in Kristiania at Delenggt. 28, 2nd floor. His occupation is painter. And yes, he is a drinker.

 

He was arrested for simple theft (paragraph 207 in the criminal code), committed on 13 Nov 1908. He was apparently in court 24 Nov 1908 and sentenced to 6 months less 7 days, to start 28 Nov 1908 and ending 21 May 1909. He has already received three previous prison sentences, first 1 April 1897 for 10 days (unclear to me what the charge was), then 30 Jan 1907 for 90 days under paragraph 207 (i.e., simple theft), and finally 26 Jun 1907 for 6 months (again under paragraph 207).

 

He served the full sentence and was released 21 May 1909. While in prison he worked as a painter and earned 2.52 kr., of which 2.35 kr. remained when he was released. He behaved well while in prison and was released to Kristiania.

 

[next page] He was last released from prison 12 Jan 1908. After that release he spent 2 months in Hadeland, where he was a painter. I'm afraid I cannot make out the rest of the record.

Forresten har han opholdt sig i Kr.a hvor han har malet i et par md. og forresten gaat og slengt.

En bror har været straffet med fengsel. Ingen i slegten sindssyk.

 

Other than that he has stayed/resided in Kristiania (Oslo) a couple of months where he has been painting, and otherwise loitered / slouched about. 

A brother has been sentenced with imprisonment. No one in the family insane.

 

The next lines list the amounts of money issued to him for bying various pieces of clothing, and for lodgings 4 nights, and finally that all the documents in the case had been lent to lawyer Ingstad.

I am very appreciative to both of you for spending time looking at these documents.  The translation has been priceless in figuring out what happened to my 2 x's great grandfather.  We don't always like what we see, but I will not judge him. 

 

I do not know what his circumstances were at the time other than his wife passing away and children passed out to farms where people took them in.  My great grandmother had a terrible job at the young age of eight due to this situation.  We have found him in a census later and he lived until 1925.  It's hard to imagine living that long, but he must have wanted to find and re-unite with his children.  

 

I am humbled by the kindness of strangers in helping me decipher these documents.

 

I must also apologize for inadvertently adding the same documents if i have done so.  I am still trying to maneuver my way through this amazing new website.
