slik at det er leselig på tysk.

Så nå trenger jeg hjelp til å få det oversatt til norsk.

Mein lieber Carl
Lange, sehr lange, habe ich auf einen Brief von dir gehoft, erstlich um
zu erfahren wie es dir du guter Junge geht, dann zweytens um
dir die beykommende Volmacht zur Unterschrift zuschicken zu kön-
nen, denn es scheint als wenn jezt Madame L[.]ndal auf 
unser Geld sehr verhungert ist, denn selbige wird aller wahr-
scheinlichkeit nach den ungerechten Eyd leisten und [wir?] müs- 
sen nach dem [..]geRecht[ens?] erstlich ihr die 92 rth etliche g. (Groschen) 
und dann 12 Zwölftel der Kosten bezahlen, welches
alles zusammen wenigstens wenn nicht mehr, so 
doch 200 fl betragen wird, wie sehr mich dies kränkt, kanst du
denken, es kommt Schlag auf Schlag, denn wenn ich auch auf 
alle übrige Schulden Zahlungen in Elbing nicht rechnete,
So glaubte ich doch, aus der R…kyschen Concurs Maaße etwas
zu erhalten, doch ich will den Muth nicht sincken laßen, Gott mag mir
alles Ungemach zu senden, Er lege auch nur auf euer Theil
mehr Glück zu; schicke doch uns mit umgehender Post die Vol-
macht damit solche nach Elbing spedirt werden kann
das du armer Schelm eine schlechte Reise haben würdest, sag-
te mir H. ..., aus unserm Hause grüßt dich alles, auch der
Kater sitzt neben mir und miaut dir einen Gruß, ich weiß
nicht, ich bin so weich gestimt, wenn ich die scheidende Natur
betrachte, welche bald ihr sterbkleid anziehen wird, noch
nie fühlte ich mich so bewegt im Herbste, es ist mir als
müste

Die Licht formen hat unsere alte Mama erhalten, das gelt
wird dir Wilh. besorgen, aber wie kömmt es mein Sohn,
das du deinem PergHerz? amentchen nicht schreibst warum
man dich nicht abholte und dann wie dir deine neue
Bekandschaften in B. gefallen, wie ich aus den Reden
deines Bruders schliese, sind es alles Leute nach deinem
Geschmack. Ihr habt da recht froh gelebt. Die gute Hübner
in Elbing habe ich immer geschäzt und eben vor 4 Tagen noch
viel Lobens wehrtes von Ihr ...einer Elbingerinn gehört und
wie Sie sich gegen dich und dem Wilh. Bewießen bestäti-
get meine gut Meynug noch mehr du erhälst das
Petschaft, obgleich Wilhelm meynte ich solte noch warten
sie gefält mir sehr. Das benötigte Papier erhielt ich
jedoch ohne Unterschrift der Tochter, ich schrieb aber
ein Billet und schob Stürtz vor, welcher dein Bevol-
mächtigter und sehr peinlich wäre, man möchte es
mir nicht zur Last legen wenn ich so viel Umstände
machte, und nach 2 Stunden erhielt ich das rechtskrä-
ftige Papier, welches dir aber jezt nicht mitschicke
es liegt bey meinen Papieren, und wenn du nach
der Stadt kömmst kannst du es selbst mitnehmen
wegen

Wegen den Stammbuch Blätter werde ich nächstens auf
Execution aus gehen, aber mein schöner junger Herr, wer
hat mir mein Blau Büchelchen, mit den Versen so die
seelige Loschin ? selbst geschrieben, mit genomen, dies
erbitte ich mir zurück, denn es ist mir über alles
wehrt, gleich nach deiner Entfernung wolte ich, um mich
zu zerstreuen, etwas aus benanten Buch ins Stamm-
buch für Wilh. schreiben und siehe da, es war weg.
Viele deiner Grüße habe noch nicht bestellen können
werde aber gelegentlich dieselben an die Behörde
befördern. Wenn du schreibst so lege doch einen
Brief in den andern, denn sonst muß umsonst
doch gelt Post Porto bezahlt werden,ich weiß über-
haupt gar nicht wie es möglich, das ein Brief
von Schiau/Schian 4 Tage unterwegs seyn kann, was
doch mit diesen beyden der Fall war. Jaster
war in Vargen Gahrinardt(??), und die ganze Stadt 
Beau Monde d. San Jagel lief, fuhr und ritt zum
Steindammer Thor hinaus, ich wolte mir den Zoo
bey Minna Gantesweiler ansehn, und hatte es
mit Wilh. verabredet, mich von da abzuholen

allein als ich hinkam war doch solch eine Menschen 
Maaße da, daß ich Gott dankte wen ich wieder weg
war, denn ich glaube, ich wäre krank geworden un-
ter dieser Menge, es waren viele Bekante, aber 
auch viele Fremde da. Da die Beaujen? weg ist
hat sich die Alte Cassiererin ein JudenKind
zur Erziehung angenommen, dies Mädchen
ist 8 Jahre alt, ist nicht häßlich man giebt
200 rtl für dies Kind, aber mit allem zusammen

kurz alles was zum Unterhalt und Erziehung

I am a native-level speaker of both German and English, but cannot write Norwegian. So I can translate this into English for you - perhaps that will help a little bit.  In the following I have replaced some commas with periods, so that the individual thoughts can be separated more easily.

 

"The letter was written 23 September 1817 and received 9 October 1817.

 

My dear Carl

I had hoped for a long, very long time for a letter from you, first to learn how you, you dear boy, are doing, and second to send you the enclosed power of attorney for your signature, because it now seems that Madame L_ndal is very hungry for our money, as she will in all probability make the unjust oath [i.e., swear falsely] and [we] will according to the current law have to first pay her the 92 rth [Reichsthaler - rigsdaler] and some Groschen [small coins] and then 12 twelfths of the costs, which all together will be at least, if not more, than 200 fl [florins]. How much this troubles me, you can imagine, there comes blow after blow, because even though I did not count on the payment of all the other debts in Elbing, I did expect to receive something from the R...kysch bankruptcy, but I will not let my spirits sag, God may send me all the afflictions as long as He sends more happiness your way. Please send with the  return post the power of attorney so it can be sent to Elbing. H... told me that you, you poor sap, would have a bad voyage. Everyone greets you from our house, even the [male] cat sits next to me and meows a greeting to you. I don't know, I'm quite sentimental when I contemplate the departing nature, which will soon put on its death shroud [i.e., end of summer]; never before have I felt so moved by autumn, it seems to me as if [page 2] I too would need to say goodbye to all that is dear to me. Our old mother has received the light forms [??], and Wilh. [i.e., Wilhelm] will get you the money, but how was it, my son, that you did not write your dearest [?] why you were not met [on your arrival] and then how you like your new acquaintances in B.; as I take it from the talk of your brother, they are all people after your taste. You have lived quite happily there. I have always treasured dear [Ms.] Hübner in Elbing and just 4 days ago heard much praiseworthy from her [from a female resident of] Elbing, and how she behaved toward you and Wilh. confirms my good opinion [of her]. What's more you will receive my blessing, even though Wilhelm thinks I should wait some more; I really like her. But when I received the necessary document it did not contain the signature of the daughter, but I wrote a note and laid it before Stürtz, who is your agent, and [said?] it would be very embarassing, I don't want to be blamed for running around so much, and after 2 hours I received the fully executed document, but I am not sending it to you now, it is with my papers, and when you come to the city you can take it with you yourself.

[Page 3] As for the pages of the poetry album [Stammbuch - book into which you wrote poetry and other quotations you liked] I will soon finish them up, but my dear young sir, who has taken with him my blue booklet with the verses that the late Ms. Losch herself wrote? I ask for this back, because I treasure it above all; just after your departure, in order to distract myself, I wanted to copy something out of this booklet into the poetry album for Wilh. and it was gone. Many of your greetings I have not been able to deliver, but as occasion arises I will forward them to the office. When you write, please put one letter inside the other, because otherwise you needlessly have to pay postage, and I don't know how it is possible that a letter from Schiau/Schian could have taken 4 days, as was the case with these two. Yesterday Gahrinardt [?] was in Vargen [i.e. Wargen, now called Kotelnikowo, 11 km northwest of Königsberg/Kaliningrad], and the whole beau monde of the city ran, drove, and rode out the Steindamm Gate [a gate in the city wall of Königsberg/Kaliningrad in East Prussia]; I wanted to see the zoo at [the house of] Minna Gantesweiler, and had agreed with Wilh. that he would pick me up from  there, [Page 4] but when I got there there was such a mass of people there that I thanked God once I was away again, because I thought I would get sick in this mass, there were many acquaintances but also many strangers there. Now that Beaujen[?] has gone old Mrs. Cassierer has taken on a Jew child for education, this girl is 8 years old and is not ugly; she gets 200 rtl [Reichsthaler] for this child, but with all taken together - housing, laundry, clothing, school money, books - in short all that is necessary for shelter and education, I think our old one has, as they say, gotten a louse in her fur, but who knows, what does this concern me? Note that the letter writer lives in Königsberg, now Kaliningrad; the city of Elbing, where the legal matters have to be taken care of, is about 100 km southwest of Königsberg.

Thank you so much for your help with the translation.

I have just "scanned" through it, and I am looking forward to sit down and really study the letter.

 

This letter has travelled a long and unbelievable journey, some of it by internet.

Written in Kønigsberg (east preussen) in 1817 and sendt to an unknown place in Germany.

Around 1850 - 1880, I belive, from Germany to Norway. Discovered among some old papers a few years ago. 

200 years after it was written, in 2017,  I tried to send photos of the letter to DA for help, but it was to large.

In 2018, with help from a Norwegian man in Germany, the photoes were sendt to Germany for help with the German writing,

and back to Norway and DA, where a man in US translates the letter from German to Norwegian.
