Ok I'm back Carl-Henry.  The baptismal record for Otto in Post # 24, what is the translation of gifte Oct 1871 mean?  His birth is 1875 right?

I'm not Carl-Henry 😉 , but: it means (Ottos parents) married in October 1871, which isn’t quite correct since they married in September 1871. And yes his birth is in 1875.

Can someone translate line 38, this would be a brother to Otto and son to Anne Marie.  I know his birth date is Jan 1, 1874 and I can see his fathers name of Syvers but everything else is hard to read for me.  Would like to know also where he was born. Thank you.

This is the baptismal record for Didrik Syversen. Column 2 says he was born 1 Jan [1874]. Column 3 says that his baptism at home was affirmed at church on 12 April [1874]. In essence, in some cases (especially when the baby seemed weak and in danger of dying), a baptism was performed quickly at home, but that always involved the danger that it might not be properly performed or witnessed, and thus such home-baptisms had to be either affirmed or repeated in church later on.

 

Column 4 gives his name, column 5 says he was legitimate (i.e., parents were married to each other). Column 6 gives his parents as Syver Andersen and Anne Marie Svendsdtr of Huseby [a farm in Røyken parish - so this is where Didrik was born], [ages] 28 and 28, married Sept 1871. There is a word before Syver's name that indicates his profession, but I cannot make it out.

 

Column 7 gives the name of the 5 baptismal witnesses. Column 8 notes that he was baptised at home by the midwife and gives her name.

I have found another brother to Otto and son to Anne Marie.  I know his birth date is Sept 20, 1879 and I can see the fathers name Syvers Andersen and mother Marie Svendsdatter but everything else I need help with.  Would like to know also where he is born.  Thank you.

Hi Martina:

 

The baptism (at https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/5902/62, entry 99) is for Siem (called Siam in the 1881 emigration record). Baptised 26 Dec [1879]. Born at what I read as Husebyeie [definitely Huseby with a couple of vowels at the end] - in essence a cottage on the farm of Huseby in Røyken parish. This is the same farm where Didrik was born in 1874, and where they were living when they emigrated in 1881. In column 6, for parents, the squiggle before Syver's name is Hmd., which stands for Husmand - what in English might be called a cottager, that is, someone farming a small plot of land and with a lower status than a full-blown farmer. The squiggle before Marie Svendsdtr.'s name is Hst., which stands for Hustru - i.e., wife. As you have probably figured out, the 1846 behind each of their names is their birthyear. The four names in the next column are the baptismal witnesses.

Could it be "Grdflk", Gaardfolk? ("Farm people")  I haven't seen it before, but several here have this title. Could it be people who worked on the farm with no ownership?

A definite possibility - but somehow the first letter looks more like an H than a G to me. Could it be "Hsflk", Husfolk, with the same meaning you indicated?

Saw your question when I got home. No, you cannot open the links unless you are logged in as a user of Arkiv Digital, where I still have a subscription. Since I renewed my subscription, it has become possible to access Svedish archive material for free. ( I have not tried it yet.)

Here is the last child that I need help with translation as the son of Syvers Andersen and Anne Marie Svensdatter, he is the first born and his name is Anton DOB: Jan or June19, 1871.

Hopefully, I have found the right one. Number 74.  Where was he borne and verify which date is correct.  This will complete the family in Sweden since I have all the families record in Minnesota!!!

Born at Huseby farm on 19 June. Incidentally, this one was illegitimate, as his parents were not married until 1 Oct of that year. Anton was also baptised at home, and the baptism was confirmed at church on the same day the parents were married.

 

Note that Anne Marie left Eidsberg 25 March 1871. She must have gotten pregnant there, moved in March to Røyken, had her baby there, and finally convinced the baby-daddy to marry her.

 

The marriage record says that Syver was an "artillerist", i.e., a soldier in an artillery unit. I'm sure he was dashing in his uniform!
