BREIEN AND LOKEN

My great grandfather was Einar Ludvig Breien (his father Karl). He came to America when he was 16, had three girls, Edna Patricia Breien was my grandmother.  His wife, my great grandmother was Berta Laurentse Loken, one of 19 (?) children.  Bertha came to America when she was 17.  I am looking to see if I can connect with ANY of the Loken's or Breien's that remained in Norway.  When I search I cannot find Loken's, and only 2 very old census' with Breien.

Berta's siblings:  Borghild (twin), Bjarne, Thorleif, Thora, Astrid, Erling, Asbjorn (?), Hardis, Martha, and others. As far as I can tell both families are from Moss.

Thank you

Yes, thank you, I have seen this and the earlier one as well.  Einar was 15 in this census, so he came to America just after it was taken.  But I can't find anything on the rest of his family.  Or the Loken's.  And there were a lot of them. lol

This is so incredible, gives me goose bumps.  How can I find out what happened to the family members that remained in Norway?  Thank you so so much.

Jens and Hulda's son Thorleif Øistein, b. 1890:

https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/5470/83

May be  Thorleif Øistein died before 1895 since Jens and Hulda gave the same name to their twin son born in 1895.

I have search for Thorleif b. 1890, but have not found his deathrecords

Randi, these are wonderful, thank you so much.  But I do have a question.  Out-migrated?  Left Moss?  Where did they go?  I do know they sent my Great-Grand mother to America alone at 17 in 1906.  I have no idea why.  I am loving all of the research though. It is wonderful to see.  Thank you so so much

Out-migrated means they left the norwegian church.  So the family no longer baptized their children in the local church in Moss parish.

from 1896 the family belonged to Frikirken:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evangelical_Lutheran_Free_Church_of_Norway

Therefore, it is  difficult to find baptism for the children born after 1896.

Reason for emigration:  tj. p. -----  maid, servant
New occupation:  tj.pige   --------  maid,  servant

 Does this make sense?

Wow, ok, yes makes a lot of sense.  Nanny, (Berta) being a maid or housekeeper, yes that makes sense.  The old story that we heard growing up was she got mad because her twin got a job working for a queen(?)  or someone of high position in Norway and Berta got angry/jealous and they sent her away.  I do not know if any of that is true. . . .But she was 17 and came alone.  Her sisters Martha and Hardis came later.  Bjarne and his wife had a daughter, Else she would go back and forth to Norway.  Else lives in NY, She is 85
