The digital census 1875

Hello,

Please excuse the fact I am posting in English as I have no Norweigian ability and so far have used a Google translator to get me this far.

Could anyone tell if there is address information on the census above? I have managed to find a place name relating to where born but I can't work out if there is a more specific address for families on the 1875 census, or indeed on any of the digitial census records.

If there isn't any more specific address information on that record, could anyone tell me how I might trace it as I would love to try and visit the place my ancestors lived?

Kind regards

Sarah

Hello Sarah,

if you post a link to the 1875 census of the family or person you work on, it is easier to advice you on where you may go for a visit.

Hi Sarah:

Yes, the censuses do provide address information. The kind of information depends on whether your ancestor lived in a rural or urban area. For rural areas, the census gives the name of the farm on which the person lived; that farm can then be located on a present-day map. For urban areas, the census gives more traditional street addresses (although in the case of the 1875 census some translation may be necessary to convert an address of that date to a present-day street address).

As Per stated, if you give us a link to the specific person in the 1875 census you are interested in, we can easily help you locate where they lived.

Hi Sarah:

He lived at what was then called Hausken in Torvastad parish. Today this is Hauskje in Karmøy municipality, just outside the port city of Haugesund in Rogaland county. For its location on a map, see https://norgeskart.no/#!?project=seeiendom&layers=1002,1015&zoom=12&lat=6624139.64&lon=-53510.48&markerLat=6624716.149602687&markerLon=-52680.09669436654&panel=searchOptionsPanel&showSelection=false&sok=Hauskje

Thanks very much Carl-Henry, that narrows it down further. In your previous reply you mentioned there might be a farm name?

Cheers

Sarah

"Hausken" or "Hauskje" is the farm name. For an American it might be more appropriate to think of this as an "estate" or "manor" - this was a single farm back in late medieval times, but by the 19th century had been subdivided into a number of individual farms as population had grown.

From the census record you can also see that he is said to live at "løpenr. 80" (that is, running number 80 in the list of individual residences in the parish). Land records of the time are organized by this running number, so I was able to find the land record for your ancestor at https://www.digitalarkivet.no/tl20081002350996. I realize this is probably not very meaningful for you, but in essence this is an index to the register of deeds. The third entry shows that Jacob Christiansen and his wife (the parents of Mathias Jacobsen) obtained their residency here on 5 May 1866.

But what this record also tells me is that, in the early 20th century, the place he lived was subdivided multiple times, with individual farms (Bnr.) #13, #14, #15, #16, #27, and #30 being carved out, and what then remained of the original property was designated as Bnr. 38.

In the Norwegian system of property registrations, everything is given a number - Karmøy municipality is #1149, Hauskje is #139 - so individual farm #38 on Hauskje is 1149-139/38. You can see it on the map here: https://norgeskart.no/#!?project=seeiendom&layers=1002,1015&zoom=16&lat=6625565.51&lon=-53219.23&markerLat=6625600.550186069&markerLon=-53206.34198633325&panel=searchOptionsPanel&showSelection=false&sok=1149-139%2F38. The property number (at this level of zoom) is shown in red; nearby you can also see individual properties 139/30 and 139/16 that were carved out of the original property. It looks like the individual farm where Mathias Jacobsen's father lived (and where, per the 1875 census, he had three sheep) is now a residential subdivision (along the shores of the bay called Hauskjevågen), and the street address is 159 Hauskjevågvegen.

And here is what it looks like today on a Google Maps satellite photo: https://www.google.com/maps/@59.4024054,5.2333218,118m/data=!3m1!1e3

At the time your ancestor lived there, the property reached down to the water on that little bay, so they probably had a boat dock as well.

Thank you so much for all the information, that is amazing. I'll study that carefully over the next few days and decide where I go from here. My Mum, who's Grandfather Mathias was, will be absolutely amazed!

Kind regards

Sarah
