Gjorde dog ingen notater.

Martin Hansen, the second son of Hans Olsen and Berte Olsdatter, was born around August or September 1811, at Vestlien gård in Toten. He was baptized at Aas kirke on September 8, 1811, as shown below on his baptismal record. He became the eldest in his family at the age of eight, when his ten-year-old brother, Ole, died from dysentery. In 1815, Mads Olsen administered the mandatory smallpox vaccination to young Martin.

Toten parish was divided in 1825, and Aas kirke became the hoved kirke (main church) of Vestre Toten. Fifteen-year-old Martin was confirmed there by sognepræst (sub-parish priest) Jacob Johan Bræm Galskjøt on October 22, 1826. Recall how significant this religious event was in the lives of our Norwegian ancestors. Without confirmation, for example, a person couldn’t be married. So, adolescents spent hours upon hours studying and memorizing parts of the Catechism and the Explanation of the Catechism so that they might receive good grades. Applicants were graded by the priest, and their grades were posted in the church book under a column called Christendomskundskab og flid, meaning knowledge of Christianity and diligence. Many in Martin’s class were average, or maadelig, but Martin received a slightly higher grade – temmelig god, as shown below. This meant “fairly good,” although other young men certainly scored higher. Several years later, Martin entered the military and served as an infantryman with a musket – a musqueter. Such was the notation inscribed on his marriage record.

Nikoline Larsdatter was the last of the eight children of Lars Olsen and Berte Andersdatter of Toten. She was born at Elton (Ælton) gård on October 30, 1818, when her mother was nearly forty years old, and she was baptized at Aas kirke on the 8th of November, as seen below. She, too, was raised in the Aas kirke congregation and was among those confirmed at the church on October 7, 1832. Concerning her knowledge of Christianity and diligence, 14-year-old Nikoline received a grade of god – “good” – which placed her squarely in the middle of the other young women in her class.

Prior to 1800 in Norway, it was against the law to marry one’s cousin. Cousins wishing to marry had to receive Kongelig bevilling, or royal license, to do so. But, as times changed, this requirement was relaxed. Twenty-six-year-old Martin Hansen of Flikkeshaug farm and twenty-year-old Nikoline Larsdatter of Elton farm were first cousins – their fathers, Hans and Lars Olsen, were brothers. Their engagement announcement was made in front of the Aas kirke congregation on March 28, 1839, with Martin’s father, Hans Olsen of Flikkeshaug serving as a witness. The cousins were joined in matrimony at Aas kirke on April 8, 1839, and the church marriage record is shown here.

A few kilometers north of the village of Bøverbru lies a small farm called Indal Østre (east). Martin and Nikoline settled there immediately following their wedding. Their first child, Berthe Børine, arrived January 23, 1840. The record says that her baptism was performed at home – hjemmedøbt – on March 15, 1840. Home baptisms usually were performed when the family couldn’t travel to the church, or when a baby was so sickly that it was feared death would occur before a traditional church baptism could be conducted. The child must be baptized, they believed, to be spared hell’s eternal fires. Among the infant’s five sponsors was farfar (paternal grandfather) Hans Olsen. Conspicuously, morfar (maternal grandfather) Lars wasn’t among them. In fact, Hans, but not his younger brother Lars, was cited in all significant, religious family events. Lars Olsen died in July 1842 and was buried at Aas kirke. Let’s discuss the church.

Aas kirke

Over the centuries, various churches have occupied the site where present-day Aas kirke stands. Today’s is the fourth church to have been constructed at this location in Bøverbru – it is not the building in which our ancestors prayed.

The first church at the Aas location probably was built before 1330 A.D. Most likely a stavkirke – a traditional wooden church – it was called Aas Michaels kirkia. This place of worship was mentioned in many medieval writings dating back to 1337. Few reliable historical facts exist concerning the church, but an old painted note on a tablet attached to the back of the altarpiece states that the 1600’s church was left standing and deserted for sixty years, until 1665. The building had fallen into such severe disrepair that it was torn down and replaced by a new church around 1675.

The second church at the Aas site was called Bangkirken, after then-pastor Knut Sevaldsen Bang. Bang was a multi-talented man. He published his own hymn book and was a wood-carver and painter. The altarpiece and the pulpit are attributed to him. Early in the 1700s, the church’s wings were extended. But by the end of the 1700s, the church had decayed to the point where services could no longer be held. A new church was to be constructed, and the old was torn down at the end of 1780 – after over 100 years of parishioners’ use.

The third church at Aas was consecrated September 9, 1789. Made of wood (tømmer) and built in the shape of a cross (kors), it was called Tømmerkorskirka. This is the church that Hans Indahl, his parents, and his grandparents attended. Much of the furniture from the old Bangkirken was placed into the new cruciform church, including the altarpiece and the pastor’s chair. In 1860, this church was thoroughly restored – with Martin Hansen Indal playing a very significant role. The photo above shows a 1910 wedding held in the church. A Norwegian bride traditionally wore black.

Many years later, on July 15, 1915, lightning struck the church’s tall steeple. It began to burn as the people of Bøverbru gathered to watch and attempted to put it out. But the fire couldn’t be stopped with the equipment of that era, and the church burned to the ground with two black pipes left standing. Fortunately, some articles were saved. Among them were: the altarpiece, pulpit, baptismal font, candlestick holders, silver altar articles, and major paintings. Sadly, the altar table, church bells, organ, and some precious wall paintings were destroyed.

Within two days of the fire, a board was convened to discuss the situation. There was no doubt in the parishioners’ minds that the church would be rebuilt. Indeed, it was, although the process took nearly six years. The dedication of the new place of worship, Aas kirke, took place on March 9, 1921.

Now, let’s return to our story of Martin Hansen and Nikoline Larsdatter. What became of their baby, Berte Børine Martinsdatter? Though she may have died shortly after her home baptism, it isn’t reflected in the church record. She may have died a year later, as a baby named Berte Karine died at Kyset farm, next to Indal farm. Did the pastor mistakenly record this baby’s middle name? Perhaps. However, another problem lies in the baby’s age. Berte Børine would have been over a year old in March 1841, but Berte Karine’s age was written as “¼” in the church book. It’s probable that Berte Børine died shortly after her baptism and the death wasn’t recorded. Finally, no Berte Børine Martinsdatter ever was confirmed, married, or emigrated from Vestre Toten.

After Berte Børine’s death, Martin and Nikoline had nine other children, all born at Indal Østre: Hans Martinsen Indahl (married Anne Karine Vetlesdatter in America), Lars, Berthe Maria (died at age two), Berthe Maria, Brede (died at age two), Oline (died at age one), Johanne Karine, Peder Anthon, and Johan Nikolai. Indal Østre is shown above in a 2008 photo.

The 1865 Norway census provides helpful information, despite glaring errors in the parents’ ages. The family lived in Aas sogn (sub-parish) of Vestre Toten prestegjeld (parish) on Indal Østre. Martin (45 – his correct age was 54) was “husfader,” or head of household. His occupation was “gårdbruger og selveier,” meaning he was a farmer who owned the land on which he lived. Nikoline (48 – her correct age was 43) and the children, Hans (24), Lars (21), Berthe Maria (15), Johanne Karine (10), Petter (7), and Johan Nikolai (1) were in the home with Anne Knudsdatter, a 25-year-old servant. Theirs was one of the more prosperous farms in Aas, where they cared for six horses, sixteen cattle, nine sheep, and three pigs, according to the census. Their farm produced barley, rye, mixed grains, peas, and potatoes. Despite the apparent success of the family, the eldest son, Hans, seems to have wanted more than his father’s farm could offer. Though we’ll never know all of his reasons, he said good-bye to his parents and Indal Østre in April 1866 and embarked on a new life – in Amerika.

Martin Hansen and his wife, Nikoline Larsdatter, were people of impeccable character. On the back of the altarpiece at Aas kirke is an old, handpainted inscription, shown above. The last paragraph reads: “Aaret 1863 Hov Aas Kirke af Menigheden bekostet restaureret under Tilsyn af Kirkeværge Ole Christian Hansen Præstsæter og med Bistand af Menigehedens Mand Lars Christiansen Blilie og Martin Hansen Indal; da Sognepræst og Provst i Thoten Presti Wilhelm Christian Magelssen.” Translated loosely, the message reads: “In the year 1863 Parishioners paid for the rebuilding of Aas church under the supervision of church warden Ole Christian Hansen Præstsæter and with the aid of parishioners Lars Christiansen Blilie and Martin Hansen Indal; at that time Parish Priest and Senior Priest in Toten, Priest Wilhelm Christian Magelssen.” A portrait of Wilhelm C. Magelssen, the priest at Toten from 1842-1876, hangs inside Aas kirke and is shown here.

As of the 1875 Folketelling (census), Martin remained husfader and gaardbruger og selveier and lived at Indal Østre with Nikoline and sons Peder Anthon and Johan Nikolai. Daughter Johanne Karine was visiting from Kristiania (now Oslo), where her position was that of lærer husholdning (household teacher). Martin had hired three servants: tjenestegut (farm hand) Hans Larsen, budeie (milkmaid) Berte Olsdatter, and stuepige (housemaid) Kristiane Johannesdatter. They were raising a foster child, too, named Helene Maria Martinsdatter.

Gårdsmannkone (farmer’s wife) Nikoline Larsdatter died at Indal Østre on Wednesday, May 2, 1883. She was 64½ years old. Her funeral was held at Aas kirke on the 18th of May. Martin survived her and remained at the farm on føderåd – his pension after he’d contracted away his portion of the farm. Martin Hansen died at age 74½, on Monday, March 29, 1886, and was buried at Aas kirke on the 9th of April.

Gårdsnavnet Indal finnes i Vestre Toten i Oppland i 1865
