I found he died May 21 1897 in Mandal

Is there any confirmation in the archives etc?

In the death protocol (21. May 1897) - it states cause of death as nerve degeneration (nervesvækkelse).

No, it was all recorded in the (church) parish records (books) (birth, marriage, death etc). Deaths you might also find in in the probate records (as shown in post # 51 for Ole Arnesen Hage).

Oddgeir I wonder if he might be buried in unnamed or common grave due to his mental illness at the time of his death. 
Doesn’t Norway at least give dignity to those who suffered from mental illness a name of burial location at the very least?
