Family Surname of Storm-UK a book which I cannot trace said that the STORM surname originated from a little village just outside of Oslo  .

The Vikings landed along the North Yorkshire coast  around Robin Hoods Bay England around 780 AD .  A lot of Vikings settled in england  .

The Surname of Storm could have derived from the old Norse Name of Stormr or possibly STROMM ( My Theory Only) i am trying to establish which village just outside of Oslo the surname originates!.

The author was Leo Walmsley however the Walmsley Society have no recollection of Leo Walmsley writing anything that said the Storm family name originated from a village just outside of Oslo .

I am proud to be a Storm even though I was born in South Wales uk  my heritage depicts I could derive from old Norse and Norwegian origins . I would dearly love to find out if the Storm name did originate from a little village just ouside of Oslo.  Any help would dearly be appreciated best

There are two challenges for your theory:

-- in Norway, inherited surnames were rarely used before 1800; with exceptions (some families of civil officers in the 1700s; also the families holding a farm for generations probably identifyed themself, and were identifies by others, by the name of the farm).

-- in Britain, inherited surnames was gradually introduced after the Norman conquest (1066).

This means that your potential viking ancestor did not carry an inherited name when he arrived. And he settled in a community where inherited surnames was not a common practice until several hundred years later.

I would say that your theory clearly fails.

Furthermore, "storm" is a common germanic word, known from Old English, Old Saxon, Old High German and Old Norse. (source: Oxford English Dictionary)

You have to investigate your line of anscestors, to see (if possible) who was the first to adopt (or be attributed with) this name.

Then, if you can learn more about this person, there is a chance to find indications on what or where the inspiration came from.

Thank you Ivar S.Ertesvåg your comments are noted the Stromm name was just a theory i thought they could have been named Stromm and dropped the second m and moved the R to after the O ! .

A hair brain idea i know  but just a Theory and only a theory but thanks for your help in putting me straight ! Much appreciated the thing is if it is true about our Surname originating from a village outside of Oslo which I don't doubt my late fathers recollection of reading such an article , the records become more and more scarce as up till now all i have got up to is 1600 Robert Storm was willed to be buried in Fylingdales church yard Robin Hoods Bay ,North Yorkshire England   and thats it . best Tom Storm

There is a former parish and municipality called Strømm, equalling the current Svelvik municipality (which will be part of Drammen municipality from 2020). See map: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svelvik

However, I find no reason to believe that the Storm surname originates from Strømm, although Strømm very well could match the description of a small village outside of Oslo. My guess is that someone searching for the Storm surname origin, assuming that the origin was Norwegian, examined the map and found Strømm (Stromm).

It should be noted that the old norse spelling of Strømm was Straum. It's related to English stream

Thank You Kristian Hunskaar That is very interesting it is only a Theory that I hold but don't have anything to back it up except a gut feeling that the norse name of Stromm could have changed over time becoming the English Surname I hold of STORM .

I have only got to 1600 AD where Robert Storm was willed to be buried at fylingdales churchyard Robin Hoods Bay North Yorshire England,  and that the (Vikings landed around that area around 780AD information courtesy of the Yorvik Viking Museum York England .)

If anyone has any other information it would be most welcome especially anyone tying Norway with Robin Hoods Bay  and the name of Storm.

Thank you all so much  best wishes Thomas A Storm.

One of my great grandfathers was Martin Robert Storm, a shop keeper in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, but he was not from the Storm family from Robin Hoods Bay. According to my mothers family, he was born in Germany, in  city/town called Halle but I have not been able to find his birth, so I don`t know in which of the 4-5 places with the name Halle he was born. He was first a sailor onboard british ships, among them SS New Pelton (Census 1881) together with his father-in-law, William Henry Brampton and brother-in-law with the same name. His mother-in-law, Mary Yeoman, was born in Cloughton, north of Scarborough, so my mtDNA comes from North Yorkshire.
