Looking for information on Larsen and Skaar families from Kristiansand.

Hello, unable to speak or read the language of Norway, I would appreciate your help in finding census records, birth, christening, marriages, divorce, death and burial records for the following ancestors.

• Ole Johan Larsen was born 19 July 1883 in Ytre Holmedal, Hordaland, Christened on 12 August 1883 and died in 1943 (place unknown).  His parents were Borre Larsen (b. 19 November 1854 d. 1935) and Ellen Oline Johannesdr Grevle (b. 29 November 1852 d. 1 March 1920).
• Ole married Olivia Martine Skaar. She was born 28 February 1891 in Vest-Agder died on 28 October 1929 in Kristiansand.  Her parents were, father - Ole Tollaksen Skaar b. 1849 in Skaar Vest-Agdr, Christened 15 April 1849 in Kvas, Confirmation 9 August 1863 in Kvas, died about 1914.  Mother - Ingeborg Marie Hamrin b. about 1854.  Christened 14 May 1854 in Haegebostad.  She resided at Kvaas, Lyngdal.
• Ole and Olivia had 5 children: Ellen Larsen (b. 1914 d. 17 February 1926); Birger Olav Larsen (b. 2 February 1916 d. 31 January 1977); Mardon Johan Larsen (b. 22 May 1918 d. 11 November 2000); Sverre Larsen (b. 19 September 1920 d. 28 July 1988) and Harry Larsen (my step-grandfather) (b. 5 July 1923 in Kristiansand d. 8 February 1999 in Australia).
• It is known that Ole moved to the United States of America some time in the 1920's with Olivia and her 5 children following some years later.  They settled in New York city.  For some reason Olivia and the children returned to Norway - I think due to ill health.  Ole also returned back to Norway some years later, however this cannot be verified.
• It is also known that Harry Larsen left Norway again, perhaps in his late teenage years or early adulthood, as a merchant seaman and eventually finding his way to and settling in Australia in the 1950's

If any information is found, could you please include a link to the location.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Skår in Kvås is a very special place, high up in the hillside above Birkeland farm. Gumpestien, the old path up to Skår, is very steep. Bjarne and Harald have been very kind to you and provided you with a lot of information and links to that information, however, you do seem to want to see the original records of the baptisms and marriages. Perhaps it is time for you to learn how to navigate the scanned parish records so that you can look up the data yourself. It is not terribly difficult and really does not need much more than the basic Norwegian that you probably all ready know or can figure out using Google Translate. 

 

I will give you a basic view of how an native English speaker can navigate Digitalarkivet Search for Church Books. Here is a link to the English version. Up in the right hand corner is the place to click to the language that you want.  This one is set on English.

You have two boxes depending on if you want a Parish or Local Parish. Kvås is a Local Parish under Lyngdal. You can get there by clicking on Lyngdal in the Parish Box or by clicking on Kvås in the Local Parish Box. 

 

You can as you get more experience use the rest of the boxes to narrow down your search to a specific record or time span but I usually just go right to the big SEARCH box at the bottom of the page and pick what I want from the options offered.

 

Click the SEARCH box. 

 

That gives you a full page of the records available in Lyngdal Parish including several Local Parishes. Look down the list and see Parish Register (Copy) nr. 3, Lyngdal, Local Parish Kvås, 1901-1934, 

 

The years are followed by a list of abbreviations. vi is the Norwegian abbreviation for Viede. Hover your cursor over the vi and the English translation pops up. (Married 1901 - 1932}  Click on the vi.

 

Now you should be in the Parish Records. Up in the left corner are the years of the first content page. They are 1901,1902,1903. You know the marriage date you want and the year is 1910. So use the right arrow symbol to move about four pages down to page 92. The second record on that page is the marriage of Ole Johan Larsen and Olivia Martine Olsdtr.

I think the birth date in the 1910 Census is a little off. It states April 4, 1854. But the original record has April 24, 1854. You do have the correct baptism date however.

A slight correction to start off. Ytre Holmedal is in the County (fylke) of Sogn og Fjordane and not in the fylke of Hordaland.

The search here is a little more complicated because the Parish is Fjaler (Ytre Holmedal) parish. But there are three Local Parishes. So you need to look at all three. I found him in the Local Parish Dale. 

 

Father is Borre Larsen. Borre must have moved around a bit since based on the birth date you have for him, his birth record is found in Vestre Slidre, Oppland. 

 

Borre's  parents are Lars Borresen and Marthe Axilsdatter.
