Elias Peter Gabrielsen 1830 - 1886

1859 gm. Marit Sølvfestdatter 1824 -

Elias is the son of Gabriel Olsen Halsaunet in Åfjord. His wife Marit was born in Lom, daughter of Sølfest Hansen from Lom who for a time lived at Tørhaug in Åfjord.

Elias paid 250 spdl. for Grovadalen when he bought it in 1870. It is stated in 1875 that Elias is a farm owner and boat builder. The livestock in Grovadal in 1875 was 4 cows, 10 sheep and 12 goats. 1/2 barrel of barley, 3/4 barrel of oats was sown, and 8 barrels of potatoes were planted. Elias sold Grovadal in 1881, and moved to Straum, where he died in 1886. (See Åfj. Hist. II p. 60 and 290)

Children:

1. Sivert b. 1860 in Åfjord, in Grovadal from 1870. Sivert was a shoemaker, and he stayed at Åsegg in 1881 when he married (Pauline) Susanne Jørgensdatter b. on Setran in 1860. Sivert died four months after they were married. His son, Sivert Peter b. 1882, domicile Småvikan, Vik. Widow Susanna was remarried in 1897 to Kristian Dons, Vik.

2. Ole b. 1862 in Åfjord, emigrated to America 1882. His daughter Olea Thelisa b. 1882. mother Karen Anna Heniksdatter Østvand. Olea married 1905 to Anton Pedersen Halsvik, Seter in Osen, later Flatanger.

3. Tina (Trina) b. 1862 in Åfjord (twin with Ole), married 1886 to farmer Kornelius Knudsen, Bjugn. Their children: a) Ingvald Konrad b. 1886. b) Signe Marie b. 1887. The family moved away from Bjørnør before 1900.

4. Mina Kristine b. 1865 in Åfjord, not registered in Bjørnør.

5. Lars b. 1867 in Åfjord, married 3 times, farmer on Vassbakkan, Straum.

I see that his cause of death is missing the transcription. According to the scanned record it was "gulsott", i.e. jaundice.

Sorry, i had a lot of work today. I will try to do a compiled post. To ensure that i got everything translated right, names etc.

 

Is there a Norwegian database similar to Find a Grave? I see some grave sites were posted and i did some cursory searches on it for other members with not much luck, just wondering if that is a good source or if there is another to use/search.

I have a few additional questions and below that will be a breakdown of the info gathered so far.

 

This will be mainly Ole Eliasson's Paternal Side of the family. I will do the Maternal side after this.

 

Gabriel Olsen (Halsaunet) - In Åfjord (Which if i have been following this correctly his name is Gabriel Olsen and Halsaunet is the farm he was on and that farm was located in Åfjord?) B: ? - ?

No other info on Gabriel Olsen or his wife at this time.

 

Elias Peter Gabrielson - 13 Jan 1830 - 1886 (The Burial Records Dag posted for Elias show his birth as being in 1824?... this seems like a large discrepancy)

According to the burial records he was buried on 3 Dec 1886 and died from Jaundice (most likely his liver was shutting down for some reason). Birth place and area he lived matches up with other records... its just the date of birth on the records that for some reason is so different from other records.

Married Marit Sølfestsdatter (B. 1824) (Vassnesset, is this the farm she was from?) on 11 Oct 1859.

They had five children together.

The farm that Elias owned in 1870 was legally split into two different sections. Section 16a was owned by one person (unrelated to the family) and section 16b was owned by Elias Gabrielsen. According to the document he was going to sell the farm to his brother in-law Hans Solfestsen but he died before the transfer of property could have taken place. His widow Anne Olsdatter (who should be Elias Gabrielsen's sister right?). The rest of the document where it talks about the probate and the values for each person i am not sure what this is saying and how the people are related to Elias Gabrielsen?

 

Elais purchases Grovadalen for 250 (spdl?). in 1870. In 1875 it stated that Elias was a boat builder and farmer. He sold Grovadal farm in 1881 and moved to the Stråum farm (probably in 1881 as well) and died on the farm in 1886.

 

Ole Eliasson (Strom when he moved to the US) - 23 Feb 1863 (some records say 1862) - 27 Nov 1908

Baptized on 26 April 1863 along with his sister Tina

Ole had a child before Emigrating with Karen Anna Heniksdatter. Their daughter was Olea Thelisa 1882 - 1960

Came to America on 16 Jun 1882 (New York). Married Kjerste Olsdatter Sveen (Sveen was name she took when she came to America) in 1899. They had four children together.

1. Mary Gudren 1899-1961

2. Clara Olivia 1901-1977

3. Lottie Mae 1904-2002

4. Thora 1906 - ?

Marit Sølfestsdatter (Vassnesset, farm she lived on?) - 1824 - ?

Marit was born at Hofsbakken in Lom (Hofsbakken a farm or city?)

Father: Sølfest Hansen

Mother: Thore

The mother and father and Marit lived for a time in Tørhaug, which is where Marit was confirmed.

 

This is everything that i have compiled from all the postings. I may have glossed over a few of the details but just want to make sure i have the major parts correct. Names, Places, relationships, etc.

 

I am going to do another post after this one about Kjerste Olsdatter Martinsveen (Sveen) after this one. Kjerste was Ole's wife who emigrated from Norway with her younger sister.

I love to try to purchse any county or city historical books or papers, etc. that have family members in them or information on the areas, farms, businesses they worked at.

Somewhat like Find-A-Grave is Gravminner i Norge. Cemeteries in Norway in English. They do have an English page that helps one use the site. But it is a little complex that takes some getting used to.

This farm was 18 markl.(???) with later serial no. 16. It belonged to Åfjordsgodset (what is this? or who is this?). In 1801, Halsaunet was a farm with a riser.

1. Hans Arentsen with his wife Beret Hansdatter. They and children are mentioned in volume I. «Gods» is the word for a larger stately home and the landowner is calles «godseier». I think Åfjordsgodset owned whole communities with several farms, churches, grain- and sawmills etc.

I wish i could access that book. i need to try to see how to get a VPN and set my IP as a Norwegian IP and see if that will work.

 

I am going to look at purchasing those books but it will have to wait a bit as the few i found and the one someone else mentioned was selling them for $50 USD each + probably $20+ to ship to the United States.
