Your explanation is in line with what I have been told. The switches between the two spellings is what I found odd. Eventually, the world won the battle, and the pronunciation was sacrificed for the spelling. It's now universally pronounced as "garden". 

 

Thank you for sharing Halvor's birth information. The earliest information I could find was using the 1865 census search tool hosted by UIT:

My aunts and uncles will appreciate the added information. I'm just beginning to dig into our family history. Perhaps I'll have to learn Norwegian in order to tap into the archives fully.
