Best GEDCOM upload Website

I was hoping to get some opinions on what is the best website to upload a GEDCOM.

I know that 'ancestry' and 'familysearch' seem to be quite popular.

Or is there a Norwegian site that serves Norwegian genealogists better?

 

What is the preferred site for Norwegian genealogists to upload their GEDCOMs and share their trees?

I expect MyHeritage is the most "popular" ancestry site for Norwegians. Not necessarily because it is the best, but because it has a lot of advertising and is the most visible. A lot of people use it, but are not necessarily very good about checking sources and validating information. I use Geni myself (it is possible to import, but use it with care as a lot is in before and merging duplicates is a neverending job), and see that if I update information on a profile, and realise a week later that it was wrong, the information is already copied between loads of MyHeritage family trees (they are connected and if you pay enough it is very easy to copy between them).

 

Ancestry and Geni is also used a lot, and I guess MH and Ancestry are the most commonly used in Norway. Familysearch is ok for looking for traces and churchbooks, but as they are transcribed by people not knowing the culture there is also a lot of bad data there that should be double checked against sources.

There is also a Norwegian developed site for genealogists in Norway, www.geneasky.net. By using that site for uploading your gedcom, you should be safe from automatically renaming individuals in your tree with false patronym icons and  surnames, as other pages does....

 

Geneasky is, as far as I know, mostly used by Norwegian/Swedes. I haven't seen to much foreign information in their "Global tree".

 

Pros: 

• Automatic search and import of records with permanent links for Norwegian and Swedish census
• Full control of your own data, no one can do changes to your tree
• Fast and responsive site, where even adding records manually from the church books is quick task, thanks to the library of records
• Accurate positioning of places by manually editing, or by Google Maps
• Automatic search of data from Digitalarkivet
• Matches from HBR may assist you in identifying persons from your family that you didn't know about yet
• Easily connect your person/family to the global tree, or upload if missing
• Easily available chat/discussion for persons in global tree
• Regularly updated, based on user input/wishes
• Based on records and proofs, not many directly related to fable figures etc... 🙂
• First time import of gedcom from MyHeritage, Ancestry and Geni went really good for my part, even all the family pictures I had on those sites were imported successfully
• Good tools available for the genealogist to quality check family tree (duplicates, missing records, missing census, etc)

Cons:

• Purpose built for Norwegian genealogists, may not fit requirements from everyone else?
• Small group of persons developing the site, so no 24/7 support (responses from support is however really fast even though it is a small organization)
• Not possible to tag multiple persons in a family picture (yet?)
• Limited amount of standard reports and charts available for printing
