Trouble Finding gårdshistorie (Farm History's)

1. I have access to the Norwegian National Archives to find some of the many different gårdshistorie (farm history) books. My issue is I have tracked a few farms that are outside of the current book I have which is (Åfjord og Jøssund Gårdshistorie) and i have no idea how to tell which book to look in for the other farms. Is there some sort of database that has a list of all the Farm History books and the farms listed within them? Since I am an english speaker and rely only on google translate it is proving very difficult for me to track down these other farm names when i have no clue where to start.

I have tried googling the farm name to see if i get more information or a location on google maps to be able to narrow down what municipality it is apart of. But every time i google a farm name it has come up empty.

2. Is there just a list of the different farm history books out there? Is there a dozen or 100's? This would help me to not waste time searching for a specific farm that there is no history for that area... if i can narrow it down to one.

Thank you all for the help you provide. It has helped me immensely in my genealogy research... along with google translate! haha.

hi do you know the name of the farm? Borh places could indicate county Northern/county Southern Trondelag. (Today called county Trøndelag) regards

Have You tried searching here: https://www.dokpro.uio.no/rygh_ng/rygh_felt.html

Theres no surprise you dont get a hit on google as Farm names could be written in many ways depending  off time. (unless You luckily just hit results from another persons queries, written for public.

I get over 11000 hits on search using  searchkey phrase "Bygdebok" (Village book in english) at www.nb.no (as I told You about in message).

I do not think there is a complete overview...

The databases of the university libraries (oria.no) and of the National Library (nb.no) probably contain the large majority.

Jan's number probably include multiple copies/issues of individual volumes.

A rough estimate can be like this:

At the height (1930s-1960s) there were 744 municipalities in Norway (now there are about 350).

Most of these have a "bygdebok". Many have two editions (an older and a newer, revised).

The term "bygdebok" includes both general history of the municipality/parish and farm/family history for the farms of the district.

A fair guess may be 4 volumes for each of 750 units.  That makes 3000.

You can note that borders between municipalities/parishes have changed. This means that a farm can be found

both within the book/municipality where it belongs today - or alternatively, where it belonged previously.

(or in the worst case: left out both places).

I suppose your best option is to ask here...  - it is a fair chance that you find experts on "your" district here.

I second this. As Jan mentions, the written form of the name may have changed over the years. This forum has members from all over the country, and if you have reference to a farm name you can get help figuring out it's location.

A few references not mentioned above that may be useful:

https://norgeskart.no/ is a map service from the Norwegian Mapping Authorities, and the search function includes searches in the national place name database ("Sentralt stedsnavnregister", SSR). Note that you can search on name and municipality, and use wildcards while searching names.

https://www.genealogi.no/wiki/index.php/Liste_over_digitaliserte_bygdebøker is a list over digitized "bygdebøker" maintained on the wiki of the Norwegian Genelogical Society.
