g = married

e = widow or widower

hu = wife

hp = hovedperson (head person)

This was the 1891 census - where you thought that maybe Kari Helgesdatter was Anne Marie Helgesdatter's sister.  So it makes sense that Anne Marie was a widow and most likely was living at that time with her sister and brother-in-law.  I think you are right in that Kari is her sister!  Thanks again 🙂

Andreas Pedersen Guliksrud - when the name is listed as this I'm a bit confused.  I would have thought that Andreas was the 1st name and Pedersen the last name. Son of Peder.  However, the Guliksrud is throwing me.  Any ideas on this?  This is the husband of Kari Helgesdatter (Ann Marie's sister).

Now I understand your question about the date 30th January - that is another couple. Nils Jensen, Opsal - he must be the son of Jens Nilsen, Opsal

Pedersen is a patronymic ("son of Peder")

Guliksrud (Gulliksrud) is a farm name

I wondered about the farm name - thanks!  So I think his "real" name would just be Andreas Pedersen, correct?  And then I can list the Guliksrud as the farm.  You are so helpful!!!  I really appreciate all of your help!

Yes, you can say in that way. In those days people did not have fixed surnames. They had a given name + a patronymic. Then in addition the name of a farm.  Farm name would change if the person moved to another farm. It is more like an address.

Perfect - that is what I'm using it as - a residence.  When I was in Norway visiting relatives in 2016 (my paternal grandmother's side), one of my relatives was showing me some old record books that showed various farms and information on them.  It was very interesting!  I know lot's about my paternal grandmother's side and have met so many of those relatives and keep in touch with them.  Now, I'm trying very hard to learn more about my paternal great grandfather's side.  This is Bernhard and Ann Marie.  Thanks again!
