Halvor Halvorsen (born 1851 - 1891) died in shipwreck outside of Pisagua, Chile around 1891. Could he have been onboard the Sea Queen?

Dear All,

Halvor Halvorsen was born in 1851 at Baksaas farm, in Ulefoss, Telemark.

He sailed on many ships along the coast of Argentina and Chile.

It is believed that he died in 1891.

Could he have been one of the crew on the Sea Queen, which sank near Pisagua in 1891? The Sea Queen was a Norwegian (former British ship) sailing vessel built in 1858 in Glasgow by A. Stephen & Sons and was transporting salpeter. From 1887 to 1891, the home of this ship was Mandal, Norway and its captain was A. Biermann from 1887-1891. Owner of ship was T. F. Andersen.

Does anyone have access to the list of crew members of this ship to verify if Halvor Halvorsen was on this ship?

If he did not die on this ship, does anybody know on what other ship he could have died?

Thank you all to this wonderful group!

Best,

Elisabeth

Sea Queen, Pisagua, 28. April. Barque "Sea Queen", Master Biermann, of Mandal, that during loading of ignited nitrate (salpeter) caught fire and was fully wrecked. The cargo was severely damaged. The ship was fully burned down and was on the 24. condemned - will probably be used as a coal vessel.

Norges Sjøfartstidende has a couple of articles about this incident, in addition to the article above. No deaths are mentioned.

Thank you very much, Frank! I guess he didn't die on this ship then. I  know he died outside Pisagua in or around 1891, but no confirmation has been found anywhere.

Perhaps he was injured during the fire and died later on from complications etc?

The owner of Sea Queen, T. F. Andorsen (not Andersen), dissolved the company "Sea Queen" as a result of this incident.

My guess is that T. F. Andorsen is Tønnes Fredrik Andorsen:

This is very interesting. It says he was a pilot (lods) in Chile, not an ordinary crew member. This probably means he was geographically stationed in one or a few locations only. Based on this information it is doubtful that he was a crew member onboard the Sea Queen.

Frank, Ivar og Sven! You guys are amazing! Thank you so much for all this information. What exactly is a "pilot" (lods) on a ship. Is it the same as captain?

LOA: What have you inquired about those origins?
PH: My paternal grandfather was born in Norway. He stayed in Patagonia, due to those vicissitudes of fate, after the shipwreck of the British ship Glengowan, on which he worked as a sailor and was carrying coal on its maiden voyage from Swansea to San Francisco - the Panama Canal did not yet exist. -. The cargo caught fire and the result was the sinking of the ship off Port Stanley on November 30, 1895. The entire crew was saved, including Halvor Halvorsen. One day of his forced stay in the Malvinas, a Swedish captain who was going to take charge of a ship in Punta Arenas offered him a job. He then moved to the South of Chile, where he stayed for several months as a watchman for the “Ambassador” that operated as a warehouse. Later he sailed a bit along the coast, worked as a laborer, a trainer, and also panned for gold.
