Edvard Farstad

Occupation as a day laborer and fisherman was stated on the register of the birth and christening of Olaf Sigvart of Farstad. Because Edvard did not remain on the FARM of Farstad he went by the patronymic surname Olsen until he emigrated

His emigration record from Norway reads:

"August 15th, 1907 from the port of Kristiansund, fisherman Edvard Olsen Farstad, having received a ticket from abroad, entered the White Star Liner. His destination was Minnesota where he was prepared to take any job he was offered, hoping to earn more money than he was in Norway." With him were his wife Beret Anna and their children Olaf and Marie. (Olaf was listed as Edvard Jr. )

School records would indicate that Edvard and family first settled in Kittson County, however by 1910 they had moved to Crookston in Polk County where he petitioned for naturalization. They are enumerated on 2 April 1910 at 635 South Main Street. He gave his occupation as a laborer at odd jobs, Beret as a washerwoman and Matt also as a laborer at odd jobs. They stated to the census taker that the entire family was able to read, write and speak English.

In May 1910 Edvard went to Outlook, Saskatchewan, Canada where he stayed untill 15 Nov 1911 when he presumably attempted reentry to the United States but according to the records from Portal North Dakota he was DEBARRED. Does this give a time when he returned to Norway?

Olaf Forstad stated that his father did not like farming in America and abandoned his family and returned to Norway. It would only be conjecture to speculate the circumstances or situations that led to his decision to return to Norway.

It would be interesting to discover if Edvard knew that his wife Beret had passed away shortly after he left and whether he made arraingements with Josepha to keep the children in America.

Nekrologen til 1 kone Beret Anna:

Kennedy Star  Friday  26 January 1912  Kennedy, Kittson Co., Minnesota                                                                         Passed Away    Died at her home in Kennedy Monday morning at 2 o’clock, Mrs. Beret Anna Farstad (sic), at the age of 52 years. The deceased leaves four children and some brothers and sisters to mourn her loss. Death came as a relief after many weary months of illness and pain. The funeral exercises were held Tuesday; Rev. Knutson of Warren, officiating, and were attended by a large number of friends and sympathizers of the bereaved family and relatives. The remains were laid to rest in Hope cemetery. The two infant children of the deceased, Olof (sic) and Shophie, who are attending school here, will let us hope, not be compelled to abandon their studies, at this time, but will find many good friends on all sides who will make their welfare a personal concern.

Fra en slektsside:

Church records in Norway show that Beret Anna was not married to either Jon Kristiansen Ildhusoy nor to Peder Knutsen Elnes, however parish records show them as the fathers of Bert and Matt. Descendants of Jon Ildhusoy told Maurice Andal that he and Beret tried to marry but his mother would not allow it. Beret was from a poor family and apparently both Jon and Peder were from affluent families and their parents would not allow a marriage between she and their sons. June 26, 1898 she married Edvard Olsen of FARSTAD, a fisherman.

August 15, 1907 they left Norway for Kittson County, Minnesota near Donaldson to join her Sisters; Martha and Josefa, and Brothers ; John, Ed , George, and Knute Andal and their families. Her mother Martha Christiansdatter Andal had passed away the year previous.

Her sons Bert and Matt, who were living with their uncles since May 1903, had saved the money to purchase the passage to bring them to America.

Edvard did not like farming or the USA so he left Beret Anna and their children and returned to Norway. Shortly thereafter it was discovered that Beret had stomach cancer from which she succumbed 12 January 1912.

After Beret Anna's death, her sister Josefa Harstad raised Olaf and Sophie. Josepha always said that Beret died of a broken heart. However, if the church records are correct, Edvard was significantly younger than Beret and this may also have played a part in the decision.

Fra en slektsside:

Olaf was 8 years old when the ticket came from America from his older brothers Bert and Matt, he and his parents had been living with his grandfather Ole Christensen at his small farm at Farstad. They sailed for America to join Beret's brothers and sisters who were living in Kittson Co., MN. There he met new relatives that had left for America before or shortly after he was born.
He stated that his father did not like farming so they moved south to Crookston, MN to find work in the growing railroad town. About 1910 his father Edvard had given up on America and abandoned his family and returned to Norway. His mother then moved Olaf and Sophie back to Kennedy, MN closer to her family. Shortly thereafter his mother developed stomach cancer and passed away Jan. 1912. He and Sophie were taken in by John and Josepha Harstad and by 1913 had moved to Barnes County, North Dakota.
These events impacted Olaf greatly and he grew up an angry young man. His marriage record speaks to his inability to maintain a loving or lasting relationship. Both he and his sister returned to Kittson County by at least 1920 where they are both found in the census records. In the fall of 1920 Olaf took out a loan and bought an 80 acre farm in Tegner township. Land records show that he was forced to sell it to a local Grain Company because he could not make the mortgage payments. He then migrated to Minneapolis where he joined his brother Bert in the carpentry business.
