Norway Church Records 1812-1938 Telemark, Solum, Solum, 1898-1909 Assist with interpretation

Hei, 

 

My great-grandmother had a daughter before she emigrated to America.  My half cousin has asked me to help identify his grandfather.  I have finally found this record, so would appreciate any help to understand every detail.  The areas with red are the words that aren't clear to me. 

 

 

I see Petter Olaf Pettersen is from Fredbohavn, but don't understand what exactly they are saying about my great-grandmother below it.  All the people beginning with "Kone" Anne Hagberg wife of Aksel Hagberg, their daughter Agnes, but isn't clear what role is Herman Andersen.  This name is not familiar.  The last column I don't understand.

Petter Olaf Pettersen is said to be an Infanterikaptein, i.e. an Army infantry captain.

 

Fredbohavn is possibly Augusta Høgberg's place of living, for the text goes on with Faderen opgivet bosat i Kristiania, i.e. The father is said to live in Kristiania.

 

Herman Andersen was a Vognmand, i.e. he worked with transport services.

 

The child was illegitimate, as the parents were not married. The text in column to the right says that the birth was reported and the information given by the mother, i.e. Augusta Høgberg. It also says that she was uncertain whether Petter Olaf Pettersen was married or not. The final comment says - I think - that a letter has been sent to the father May 10th 1909: Den opgivne Fader tilskr[evet] 10/5-09

Have looked a bit on the website for the military records and have not been able to locate them yet.   Have worked a little bit in the archive and have made some great finds, but am not expert at it.  Do you know which area of the arkivet I would look for any details on him?   Or would it be a different archive? 

 

What does the cross by Petter's name signify? 

 

I see his name come up in many kirkebøker entries and if it is the correct person, he does appear married, but there are others with the same name.

 

Have been tracing my cousins lines with DNA, a difficult process as they are getting quite elderly and there aren't many close matches.   It gets more difficult to trace back to the 1700s for common ancestors. 

 

Those I have traced back go to the Rogaland area on both his great grandfather and great grandmother's lines, but the Pettersen name has not shown up yet.  I would assume this is a fixed surname during that time due to the military rank?

In regards to whether Petter Olaf Pettersen was married or not - he was not, he was divorced. By looking up his wife in the municipal census' (from 1908 to 1910) for Oslo (Kristiania) you will see in box 7 (unmarried, married, legally separated or divorced) his wife stated she was fraskilt/skilt i.e. divorced. The census of 1908 was enumerated on February 1st.

Captain Petter Olaf Pettersen was granted "avskjed i nåde" (Honorable Discharge) 28. October 1910 - which means he left the service before reaching the age limit/service ended. Thus, he would retain his title and rank.

 

Kristian has supplied the link to his emigration to the US in the previous post. Emigration date was 4. November 1910 and he arrived NY (ship Oscar II) on the 15. November. I assume you have access to Ancestry, if not let me know.

I have not done any research regarding his stay in the US. I will add it's claimed from some of the information I found (see below) he died in US in 1919.

 

On the Norwegian site https://www.nb.no/search also called "Bokhylla" I found an extensive biography of Petter Olaf Pettersen in addition to other books and newspaper articles. Now, Bokhylla is an online service giving users with Norwegian IP addresses access to every book published in Norway up until 2000. From the book Studentene fra 1883 : fest- og minneskrift til 50-årsjubileet 1933, page 116 it is stated Petter Olaf Pettersen died 26. May 1919 in US.

 

In the newspaper Nordisk Tidende, Thursday 13. June 1918 a notice was placed. It reads; "The Norwegian General Consulate, 17 State St., New York, seeks Petter O. Pettersen Stenstrup from Kristiania, last known to be employed by Great Northern Paper Co. in the state of Maine, a post he left in the beginning of November 1917."

 

Hence it seems he used his mother’s maiden name (Johanne (Hanna) Amalie Steenstrup) in the US.
