Boats to NZ

Hi

I'm trying to find NZ records about boats arriving in, but wondered if there would be better records about boats departing from Norway, arriving New Zealand (Lyttelton being currently the most likely port) sometime between the period of approximately 1865 and 1872.

I don't believe my great great grandfather was a paying passenger, either working his fare across (or supposed to have returned as crew!) or possibly as an 'assisted' passenger.

He doesn't appear to have been great with dates, but would have likely been aged between 25-33 in 1872, depending on which record you believe.

Any helps or hints appreciated thank you.

I assume your grandfather was a Norwegian emigrant:

 

You could try to look for him in the emigrant record. Many of these are searchable in the Digital Archives. I have put in the category and the period, - you can put in some “individual information” here and do a search:

If he came to NZ as a sailor he should be in the seamen rolls. Some of these are searchable in the Digtal Archives, other must be found at one of the Regional State Archives.
