Two Illegitimate Brothers, Embret Eriksen (born April 13, 1865) & Eilert Eriksen (born September 5, 1867) in Vinger, Norway

I have "run into a brick wall" trying to find these two brothers who were illegitimate sons of my great great great uncle Erik Jansen.  In the 1875 Christiania (Oslo) Census he used the name Engebret or Ingebret Jansen.  He, along with his future wife, were baptismal sponsors for a child of his future brother-in-law.  There his name was also listed as "Engebret Jansen".  He married Anna Lisa Saterstrom (born in Bro, Vermland, Sweden but had moved to Oslo) in Jacobs Church in Oslo on May 21, 1877.  Then he was using his correct name of Erik Jahnsen and he worked in the gas-works.  In 1888 Erik and Anna Lisa emigrated to America and lived in Hatton, North Dakota where he worked as a carpenter.  Erik had a sister at Hatton and several nieces and nephews.  His wife also had a niece living at Hatton and two more nieces later moved there too.  In 1926 the couple moved to a Lutheran Old People's Home - the Bethesda Home for the Aged in Wilmar, Minnesota.  Erik died in 1930 and Anna Lisa in 1932.  The couple had no children together.  I don't think my Grandmother, her siblings or their cousins ever knew that Erik had two sons.  They knew the old couple well but just thought they had no children.  I am wondering if anybody could give me any ideas as to finding Embret and Eilert?  I am thinking that perhaps Erik used the name Engebret to try and "disappear" from the responsibilities of his two sons.  Erik had an older brother named Engebret Jahnsen who still was living in Vinger.  The boys are in the Vinger 1875 Census.  Embreth Eriksen is living in Vinger on Saethre Nordre as "Fattigkassen".   Eilerth Eriksen is living in Vinger on Leerengen as "Fattigkassen."

Any help would be very much appreciated!  Thank you!

Engebret Eriksen Leerengen, unmarried servant born 1864 in Vinger, dies in Brandval 1881 (no 24):

DFP, no more info here: https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/34379/156

I assume this could be your Embret, since Engebret is just another way of writing the same name and he is written from Leerengen where his brother Eilert stayed at the time of the 1875 census.

Thank you so much, Carl.  I am sure this is the older son that you found in the Brandval records.  He died so young!  His father lived to the age of 89 years.

I appreciate you finding this for me so much!

Best Regards,

Clark

Just adding the link to Elling´s confirmation https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20060725010495

I found an Eilert Eriksen in Adressebog for Kristiania 1883 at Torvet 6 https://www.nb.no/items/2414be1cc895422e8a05f036005a3c8f?page=179&searchText=Eriksen. It may not be the right Eilert since the information about where people lived were usually from the previous year. The year when he moved appears to be 1883, but the date in the column after his name is 1st of Oct. 1882 (his confirmation date) https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20060725020035 I suppose he could have moved late in 1882 and it would have been the church year 1883.

I think it is quite likely that he got his papers from Vinger in 1889 because he was planning to get married. I have not found the marriage registered in Oslo Domkirke, but even if I did find the correct Eilert Eriksen the marriage could have taken place anywhere, provided his fiancee had family who wanted her to be married in their local church.

The Adressebok for Kristiania of 1899 does not have an Eilert Eriksen. However, there are a lot of E. Eriksens registered. None of them were registered with the address Torget 6 but this proves nothing. People were moving to new flats all the time. I´ve also looked for him under the name Sæther and Leereng* to no avail.

Thank you so much, Inger.  I do think this is the correct Eilert Eriksen.  I too thought that he probably asked for his record from Vinger in 1889 with the intention of getting married.  I appreciate your help so much!

Best Regards!

According to the 1885 census, the Eilert Eriksen living in Torvet 6 is married to Eli and born in 1851:

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/census/person/pf01053257010725

He got married in 1884 (no 10), with address (Stor)torvet 6, a birth year of 1854 and his father is given as Erik N Rønebæk:

https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/5436/61

He dies in 1898, no 54 (which may be why he is not in the 1899 address book):

https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/635/32

The marriage also states that he is a trade merchant from Nes in Hedemark. Unfortunately, this does not sound like the Eilert you are looking for. It is probably rather this one:

Thanks Carl.

No, that's not the Eilert Eriksen I'm looking for.  I'm thinking that Inger is right in assuming that in 1889, Eilert was probably getting married.  I've also wondered if perhaps he joined the military or became a seaman?  I don't know how he could disappear.

I appreciate the help I've been given from people on this site!

Maybe your Eilert change his first name to Kasper?

I found this family in census 1900

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/census/person/pf01037030001101

Kasper Eriksen in census 1920 born 5/9 1867

Kasper Eriksen and Kaisa Nilsdt married 26/12 1889 in Røyken. His father's name does not quite match, Erik Olsen Bendikstorp

Hi Anne,

That's him!  I certainly did not think that he would have changed his first name!  Yes, his father's name was Erik Jahnsen Bendiktorpet.  It's no surprise that he has Erik "Olsen" listed as the name because he maybe never even met his father.

Thank you so much!  This mystery is finally solved!  And thank you to everybody who so kindly took the time to help me!  I appreciate this so much!

Best Regards!

Clark Monson
