Thank you for the transcript Knut, its much appreciated. I am now placing it into Google translate and reading the English.

The last paragraph is the most interesting, and valuable to confirm the Captain.

Many thanks, John

Thank you Knut, its most interesting and much appreciated. I think the ring with the date 6/2/1887 should be the key to his identity. Presumably this was his wedding ring.

Much appreciated, John

Now closing, and to bed! Goodnight from Newcastle upon Tyne!

Found about 200 yards south of Hovstrup Strandlen at Henebys Forstrand with the head towards the sea. Clothed in a green waistcoat, blue-striped cotton shirt, wool undershirt, trousers of same fabric as the waistcoat, grey wool underpants, black socks, and leather boots. On the body was a golden watch and a golden ring with a not readable name and the date 6/2 87. The head was swollen and had skin-wounds. 179 cm high. Før*, no beard, dark hear, no specific marks, the front teeth in the lower jaw sat very irregularly. Assumably seaman.

Før* (=tjukkfallen): (a trifle) on the plump side

I think this might be Captain Johan Johansen in Christiania in the 1900 census, married to Gustava from Svelvik

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/census/person/pf01037045104581
Here, he is listed as former captain (skibsfører), now coal merchant.

His marriage, however, was already on November 19, 1885, which does not match the date inside the ring.

No. 71:

SAO, Oslo domkirke Kirkebøker, SAO/A-10752/F/Fa/L0032Ministerialbok nr. 32, 1885-1902, s. 10

Given the fact that the name in the wedding ring was unreadable, maybe he bought a used ring and erased the name?

The year here is 82, not 87: 6/2 82.

The first two letters look to me to be "Gu"

consistent with Gustava.

The date could be that of their engagement rather than their marriage.

Thank you Richard and Matthias,

Looking at the Churchbook record for their wedding Capt Johan Johansen, his wife to be is Gustava and her next names appear as Maria Licduum (have not got the spelling?).

I agree that it looks to be more like an engagement ring, but I presume we cannot confirm this because presumably engagements were not recorded?

Yes, this must be the right person. This is his death in the list of reported deaths at the Drammen byfogd (town court) Skiftemateriale: SAKO, Drammen byfogd, H/Ha/Haa/L0010: Dødsjournal., 1905-1909, s. 114 - Skanna arkiver - Arkivverket (digitalarkivet.no)

Captain Johan Johansen, 46 years old, died by Timarus shipwrecking, leaving wife Gustava and 3 children
