Hi I am looking for information about my grandfater who was apparently a cabin boy on a the Norwegian vessel SS Geiser and jumped ship in Fremantle western Australia in 1912.  On all the records we have of him 

 he has stated he was born Joseph Albert KOLIN, born in Flekkefjord, Norway on 24 0ctober 1898 however I am finding it hard to find information on his life before coming to western Australia. Any ideas of how i can find more information about him and his family would be greatly appreciated as I have no idea where to search next.

I assume he married someone in Australia? In that case you could try to find the records of his wedding. If old Australian wedding certificates is similar to Norwegian certificates you would find his father’s name there.

If he lived in Norway until he went to Australia, there should be a record on him both in the 1900 and 1910 census which both are online. I move this thread to the users forum in case someone want to help you in the search.

Thank you I have changed my name to include my surname I hope. There is no mention of his parents names on the marriage certificate and I cannot find him in either census

Did he jump ship in Australia 1912 at the age of 13 - 14? Possible, but very young indeed. How do you know that he arrived in Australia in 1912? Perhaps he was born before 1898?

Can not find any Norwegian ships named SS Geiser. Only the Danish emigrant ship SS Geiser, but it was exposed to a maritime accident on 14 August 1888 and never sailed again.

Are you sure that SS Geiser is the correct name for the ship and not eg Geysir / Geyser.

i can see from a Google Search that a Rose Raymen has made a similar, earlier request on Jewishgen.org.

if he really was Jewish, his records would likely not be found in the regular, Norwegian church records. But if the names of his parents were Jack E and Rosa, as Anton Hagelee posted on the Norway heritage site, it does not sound very Norwegian. Of course, those names may also be anglicized.

 

From your comment on the Norway Heritage site, it sounds like you have taken a DNA test. Did any male line descendants of Joseph Kolin also take a YDNA test, or did you get any matches with others in Norway from the test you took? That might help quite a bit in the search.

Det kan være at Kolin ikke er Joseph sitt døpenavn. Kanskje han har tatt det for letthetsskyld, eller at mora har (emigrert)giftet seg på nytt og at han bruker stefar sitt navn.

 

Det er jo noen Joseph Albert å finne i Vest Agder, selv om ikke f. data passer helt, men der har jo Frank Marton ett godt poeng se #2
