Biografi

Kutná Hora er en by i regionen Sentral - Böhmen i Tsjekkia ca. 70 kilometer øst for Praha .

I was born March 11, 1850 at Kutna Hora , Czechoslovakia . When I was 1 1/2 years old , we moved in to the city where my father was an officer . We moved to a dwelling near the courthouse . Later we moved to Tahadla near a sugar refinery , where I started to go to school . Later we moved to Oumemina and I went to school at Kresetice . When I was 10 years old, we moved again to Kutna Hora and I went to school until I was 14 years old . Then I started to learn the trade of mechanic .

After the war in 1866 , on the first ship I came to America , New York City and in 1869 I got married . Our first child , a daughter , died 9 days after birth . Later , another daughter , she was ailing for more than a year and when she was 2 years old , she died of diptheria . Her name was Jennie . At that time our son , Jaroslav (Jerry) was born . After Jennie's burial we left Iowa , fearing diptheria would take our son, too .

We started farming 3 miles from St Ansgar . In that time , we lost $1000.00 , so the fourth year we moved to Kansas . The first three years we had no crops , it was too dry . The first year I went to Nebraska to help harvest and any other work from May to December . The second year the same . The third year they were building the railroad at Lenora , so I went to work for the railroad . After that , we began to have crops and things were better . I got most needed machinary for field work and a threshing machine . Later I sold my farm and bought another on the Big Timber (north of Jennings) and now have 560 acres .

March 11, 1923 at 73 years old Karel Votapka Sr .

Both Karel/Charles and Marie/Mary Ludra Votapka worked in the cigar factory , making cigars by hand when they first came to America and lived in NYC . Later they helped making chewing tobacco . After their marriage , Charles went to night school and learned English and German . He could not stand very comfortably making cigars and did not like the tobacco , so he went to work for the Bliss Sewing Machine Company .

Charles became a naturalized citizen while in New York . The original name was spelled Wotapka , but his naturalization papers show Votapka as pronounced in the old country . He did not have the money to change the name back to Wotapka , thus it is spedded with a "v" to the present time .ith my wife together 51 years . She passed away , had a heart attack . Son and family moved with me . He is renting the farm .

Familien opplevde endel tragedier i sitt harde liv i Kansas .

Utdrag fra en annen biografi ; Joseph Jedlicka and his sister, Johanna, and her husband, Frank Zemanek, arrived in New York City on the 9th of July in 1863 from Bremen, Germany aboard the steamship "Astroman". They disembarked at Castle Gardens, a customs and immigrations area at the south end of Manhattan Island.

Så flott! Der forklares også endringen av W til V som 1 bokstav i etternavnet også....

The original spelling of the Votapka family name was Wotapka. The naturalization authorities, however, made an error by writing the surname with the letter "V" instead of "W." When Charles went to the authorities to have the error corrected, he was told that it would take a court action and considerable money to correct the mis- -26- take. Since Charles had very little money at that time, the spelling of the family name remains Votapka to this day.
