Carla J Tweeton Skrevet Juni 6, 2022 Del Skrevet Juni 6, 2022 My gt. grandfather sought permission from Vastra Fagelvik parish, Varmland. This was about 1880 to seek work. His name was Anders Andersson Sloreby. He was married to Anna Olsdotter about the same time. Their first child was born June 2, 1881. My grandmother always said she was a Swede born in Norway. The census in the US give her as born in Norway but Swedish; her baptism is recorded in the Vastra Fagelvik Parish , SW. I have a small metal container with a residue of tobacco or whatever . The engraving on top is written Anders Anderson SLOREBY 'Odemark'. Before I donate this to our County Historical Society I'd like to know if this area in Norway had more employment areas such as carpentry. They were there only a short time before coming to America. it is also possible that my grandmother did not go to this Norwegian area but stayed with her husband's family who had moved to the Sloreby farm in Oymark Parish in Ostfold, Norway. I am just interested in what attracted Anders to this move. Thank you Lenke til kommentar Del på andre sider

Anne-Lise Hansen Skrevet Juni 8, 2022 Del Skrevet Juni 8, 2022 (endret) About Swedish immigration to Norway: https://nordics.info/show/artikel/population-movement-to-and-within-norway-1830-1914/ «- The Swedes completely dominated immigration in the 19th century and until around 1920. Along the entire Oslo Fjord, north to Hedmark and south along the Sørland coast, they settled down, young women and men, and offered their labor. The Swedish migrant workers came mainly from three landscapes in Sweden: Värmland, Dalsland and Bohuslän. Over 80 percent came from these areas, says professor of history, Jan Eivind Myhre. From the middle of the 19th century until the First World War, more than 100,000 Swedes came to Norway.» Av Trine Nickelsen Publisert 1. feb. 2012 (Translated excerpt from the next link that is in Norwegian.) https://www.apollon.uio.no/artikler/2002/svenskenes.html @Carla J Tweeton Endret Juni 8, 2022 av Anne-Lise Hansen Anton Hagelee reagerte på dette 1 Lenke til kommentar Del på andre sider

Lars Hanssen Skrevet August 19, 2022 Del Skrevet August 19, 2022 Hi Carla, Just a brief decription of Odemark/Øymark from Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Øymark With regards to Sloreby, you may see how close it is to the Swedish border by following the link below (Sweden on the eastern side): https://norgeskart.no/#!?project=seeiendom&zoom=14&markerLat=6595062.159717811&markerLon=314592.8671559762&panel=searchOptionsPanel&layers=1002,1013,1014,1015&lat=6594881.02&lon=314506.71&showSelection=false&p=searchOptionsPanel&sok=sloreby I am myself from a place even further down to the south on the map, with the Swedish borders almost closing in on both east, south and western part of the Norwegian area. As a modern citizen of the Nordic and Scandinavian area, I do consider myself to be Svorsk (Swedorgian). What my passport is saying is just words written on a paper.. 😉 In the late 1800s, a lot of Swedes were indeed looking for better opportunities, times were though in Sweden. Some found those opportunities in the neighboring countries, whereas others also moved all the way to Americas looking for the better life... Living this far north, your family might have emigrated to US through Oslo. In Sweden you may follow the life of your family through "husförshörslängder" as published by the Swedish national archive. In Norway, you will only have census at given years and potentially their registration of moving in and out of the area, in addition to emigration records (if emigrating out of Oslo/Christiania). Some parts of my family is listed in both the Swedish husförhörslängder and the Norwegian census at the same time, so it might be difficult to actually identify where they actually lived at the time (as it is so close to the border for you as well), birth records of any potential children might give a better and clearer answer to same...
