Rolf Ralph Emanuel Johannessen, 99, of Mesa, Ariz., passed of congestive heart failure Monday, Oct. 22, at Banner Gardens Hospice.

Born in Skien, Norway, the son of the late Bjarne and Alfhild Johannessen, Rolf and family migrated to the United States in 1923, settling in Niles, Ill. He was a long-time member of the AARP.

He was educated in Illinois public schools and graduated from Lane Technical High School. Soon after he was drafted into the Army where he served in the European Theater in the 104th and 82nd Re-Con Division.

After retirement he was very active in the AARP, serving as chapter president, assistant state director and secretary of the state legislative committee plus multiple roles in the Senior Center in Hayward, where he and his wife, Betty had settled.

Additionally, at his home in Fountain of the Sun in Mesa, he was known as a champion card player in bridge, 500, pinochle and hand and foot.

Rolf is survived by his sister, Thora Miller, of Peru, Ill.

His wife of 57 years, Betty, passed away in 2001.

Mr. Johannessen was born Jan. 6, 1919, in Norway to Bjarne and Alfhild Johannessen. He lived and worked in Chicago for many years before retiring to Mesa, Ariz. He was active in AARP, serving as chapter president, assistant state director and secretary of the state legislative committee.

Survivors are one sister, Thora Miller of Peru; and one niece. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Betty, and one sister.

Thora Miller, 96, formerly of 1327 Maple Drive, Peru died March 14, 2014, in Heritage Health Care, Peru.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in First Congregational Church of Peru with Pastor Dale Pederson officiating. Burial will be at Peru City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. Wednesday until time of services. Hurst Funeral Home, La Salle is handling arrangements.

She was born May 5, 1917, in Norway to Bjarne and Alfhfhild Johannessen. She worked at Peru Medical Center for many years until retirement.

She was a member of First Congregational Church of Peru and Sons of Norway.

Mrs Miller is survived by two special friends Ms. Mary Louise Mini of Peru and Barb Nanni of Oglesby; stepchildren, Sherry, Jerry, Rena and Kris; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one niece, Carol Kiessig.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph Madson; second husband, Earl Miller; one son, Phil Madson; two stepsons, Bruce and Kenneth Miller; one brother, Ralph Johannessen; and special friend, Wayne Weygand.

Bernice Alivilde Johannessen Hansen passed away on Dec. 1, 2002. Scattering at sea will take place as she wished. Baptized "Borgany" in her native Norway, Bernice was born July 29, 1913, and came to the United States with her family at the age of 8. Immediately upon arrival, they settled in Chicago, Ill., where her name was changed to "Bernice" by the public school teacher who thought "Borgany" too foreign-sounding and difficult. Her father died when she was young in the midst of the Great Depression, so she had to leave high school early to work and help her mother support her sister Thora and her brother Ralph, both of whom finished their educations thanks to her sacrifice. She married Gunnar Hansen, a native of Denmark in 1943. She was introduced to this accomplished Danish Engineer by her piano teacher, his sister-in-law. They had one child, Carol Ann, and moved from Chicago to Sunnyvale, Calif. in 1957. There she worked at Westinghouse for 18-years making many lifelong friends and doing a remarkable job managing complex medical insurance accounts for many, many people. She only recently relocated to San Luis Obispo this last year as a consequence of her failing health and to be closer to her beloved daughter, granddaughter and great-grandchildren. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband Gunnar. She is survived by her daughter Carol and husband Russell; grandchildren, Priscilla Raia and Randal Kiessig and great-grandchildren Joseph Gunnar Raia and Mary Alice Raia; as well as her sister Thora Miller of Peru, Ill., and brother Ralph Johannessen of Mesa, Ariz. Donations may be made in her name to Hospice Partners of the Central Coast, the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society. Arrangments are under the direction of the Coast Family Cremation Service.

Kiessig, 72, passed away on July 5, 2005, at UCI Medical Center in The City of Orange after a courageous battle against lung cancer. A private funeral and burial was held on the 8th of July and a public memorial is being planned. Russ was born on Dec. 14 1932 to Otto Kiessig and Netha McCord in San Francisco, California. Many of his growing up years, however, were spent in San Diego (loved to body surf at "The Cove" in La Jolla) and also a year in Mexico, with his parents and sister, Pat. He served in the US Marines in Korea and attended Santa Barbara Junior College and USC - graduating from the San Francisco State University with a degree in Psychology. Additional to a myriad of jobs during his college work (seemed like there was nothing he hadn't done!), he also worked as a personnel director for the Mellonics Division of Litton Industries, where he made many life-long friends-then later started his own "headhunting" business called Professional Resource Associates in Mt. View, California. On a trip with his family he "discovered" Sycamore Mineral Springs and in 1975 purchased the rundown facility and spent the next 27 yrs revitalizing it-adding hot tubs, motel rooms, a fabulous restaurant, massage services and so on with the help of his right-hand man Steve Gregory. Later he purchased the Avila Hot Springs and the land on which he planned to build Paso Robles Hot Springs and Spa - the main spa building having been finished a couple of years ago and already bringing people from near and far for the soothing hot tubs and relaxing massages. His passion was fishing and the sea - and to that end he established the non-profit Port San Luis Marine Institute, for which a permanent building is now in its final construction stage for opening soon for the public's education. Their annual fundraiser - Seafare - has become an annual "party" which draws people year after year, and there are literally thousands of Central Coast schoolchildren who have seen the "real" ocean due to Russ' efforts. He also helped start the nonprofit ECAA, The Esophageal Cancer Awareness Association, to help fund information on this deadly cancer that he successfully fought in 1999-2000. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Carol; his four children, Richard and his wife Lynne, Randall, Priscilla Raia and Stephanie Ramos; eight grandchildren; sister, Patricia Swanson of Washington; brother, Lawrence Kiessig of Santa Rosa and numerous nephews and nieces. The family requests that all donations be made in his name to: Port San Luis Marine Institute, P.O. Box 460, Avila Beach, CA 93424.
