Hello,

My name is Jessica Welch and I have been searching for our Norwegian side of the family and just keep getting dead ends.  My great-grandfather was supposedly born in Norway but no one has any information except USA census, death and SSN records.  Here is his information that we have but I am not sure if that is correct:

Name:  Hans Hansen

Born:  June 12, 1869

Place:  Prostebakke, Norway

Father:  Hans Hansen

Mother:  Elizabeth??

both born in Norway

Not sure if he came over by himself or with his parents young or if he did not even know his parents.

Any information would be fantastic!

Thank you,

Jessica Welch

I would be willing to bet that the correct name is Prestebakke.

Do a search in Enningdalen, and you will probably find what you're looking for.

Well, I had the same thought. Been browsing through the Churchbook from Prestebakke [Idd, Enningdal] the years from 1867 – 73, but no obvious candidate. Unfortunately.

Never mind this one. People don't get married before they're even born. 😳

Candidate:

In the 1875 census there is a family in the city of Stavanger with these members:

- Father: Hans Hansen (born 1836, stonemason)

- Mother: Elisebet Hansen (born 1834)

- Daughter: Christine Olava Hansen (born 1863)

- Son: Hans Emil Hansen (born 1869)

- Son: Tønnes Hansen (born 1871)

They are registered in a part of Stavanger called Strømsteinen.

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/census/person/pf01052234020812

I find the baptism of Hans Emil Hansen in the church records of St. Petri parish in Stavanger. There his mother is registered with her patronym: Elisabeth Tønnesdatter. Hans Emil is born on the 11th of April 1869 and baptized on the 23rd of May. Baptism #185 on the left hand side:

What makes this candidate interesting is that there is a street called Prostebakken not far from the church of St. Petri. But if this street was actually a part of the St. Petri parish, I don’t know.
