De får bl.a. datteren Inga Jacobine Andrea Becker f. 10/11-1861 i Horten.

So your JHH worked in Sarpsborg, which is where Lars' JHH and his wife Jacobea & stepdaughter lived in the 1870 census, see above. And your JHH reported labor at Walloe and Tønsberg: Walloe must be Vallø (modern: Valløy), which is in Sem and which is where Lars' JHH's parents lived.

Thank you so much Richard - your observations are excellent - and yes the Americans don't get the Norwegians names write right....More and more I am inclined to think that this is 'my' Aussie Hansen...but why he came to Queensland is a  mystery...but I am amazed at the international networks re Seafarers and the Nordic churches and USA and even in regard to the  much smaller numbers of Scandinavians who came to Australia...but nearly all of Australian capital cities are on the coast...

I see from the 1870 census https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/53317/188 that Johan and Jacobea Hansen have a foster daughter Inga Becker , born in 1861 in Horten and that his wife Jacobea was born in 1819 in Kongsberg.

Jacobea Arnesdatter Becker born 28/2-1819, baptized 18/12-1819 at Kongsberg. Her brother Arne Arnesen Becker 1825-1901, skipper, ship owner and farmer in Horten, was married in 1854 in Borre to Helle Karine Bang. Arne Becker has had a street named after him in Horten, Arne Beckersgate. They get, among other things, daughter Inga Jacobine Andrea Becker b. 10/11-1861 in Horten. She must be the foster daughter who in 1870 lives with her father's sister in Sarpsborg.

In the 1865 census, Jacobea Becker, 47 years old, unmarried, born in Kongsberg, lives in Ollebakgaden in Horten and runs a "Fashion shop". They must therefore have married between 1865 and 1870, then probably in the Methodist church in Horten. Possibly they can be contacted directly to investigate whether this is the right man, who already travels to Queensland in 1872 and is divorced before 1875.

Thank you so much Anita....amazing...the divorce/separation may explain his 'exile' or 'running away' to Australia....

Census 1870!

This one is very interesting.

He was born in Semb, the municipality next to Tønsberg.

He is a sailor missionary.

Helvig Hansen (mother) died i 1890, no heirs mentioned

... which means we have yet to ascertain whether Johan Henrik Hansen, son of Bøye and Helvig, is your Johan Henrik Hansen. (But it is a good candidate.)

Thank you so much...Agreed...he is certainly a good candidate....a divorce/separation may explain some things...

There were large Methodist congregations in Sarpsborg, Halden, Konsgberg and Arendal.

There are member lists that have been scanned, but I have not yet found either JHH or other relevant people.

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/search/sources?s=metod*&from=1850&to=1880&format=all&archive_key=

I haven't checked them all - and there are other dissenter lists as well.

Amazing! Thank you so much...it is really quite an insight to Norway....and I deeply appreciate your assistance....The Methodist connection might help explain the anglicisation of Hansen and the link with New York...

Well, I can't thank you enough, dear people in Norway, for your efforts...I am going to later have to try and summarise some stuff...

The 1871 July edition of The Sailors Magazine (New York), page 196, writes that Captain Hansen, a Norwegian by  birth, was converted in this country [namely USA - these things happen there!] and after having been licenced to preach, returned to Norway...in one of his letters he writes that he used Methodist congregations in Norway....it may explain why he is not on the roll of seafarers missionaries in Norway....his coming to Australia may be due to a marriage breakup, a sort of running sway....his calling himself a 'Lutheran minister' in Queensland, Australia, may indicate an evolving or maturing understanding, even though he continued a sort of 'revivalist' network......

I hope the following is of assistance.

In 1869, the Forty First Annual report of the American Seamen's Friend Society had this to say about Rev. J. H. Hansen who reports on

his preaching itinerary and the places he visits....

'FREDRICKSHALD - Rev. J. H. Hansen, Sailor Missionary.

'Mr Hansen commenced....at Wallow Saltwerk, a place of 500 inhabiitants, mostly sea-faring people, December 1st, 1867.

In a letter dated August 21st, 1868, he says he labored on the islands...travelled on the West coast, visiting Langesund, Porsgrund,

Skien, Kragero, and several intermediate towns....visited Horten (our naval station)...in ...August visited the borders of Sweden...Fredrickshald...

preached sometimes in private dwellings, but chiefly in the Methodist Church...in September...in Christiania ..in a large hall...

..October..in the Bethel room...and neighbourhood of Tonsberg and on the islands...November... Christiania...Sarpsborg (letter 1869)...in the towns of

Christiania, Fredrickshald, Fredrikstad and Sarpsborg...and have been permitted to make use of the Methodist churches in these towns...Could you appoint H. P. Bergh in Christiania?...' etc...

Excerpts from pages 12-14  Forty First Annual report of the American Seamen's Friend Society...

I don't think Johan Henrik lived in Norway in 1865. There are no relevant hits in the census.

Under the same census, there is an interesting match here:
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/census/person/pf01038118005280
(see number 183).

This must be Boye/Bøye Hansen and wife Helvig. These are the "parent candidates" mentioned by Richard Johan Natvig. Father is "Hans B" - and that makes sense when we are looking for Johan Henrik Hansen – not Johan Henrik Boyesen/Bøyesen.

(He was christened Hans Bøye: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/255/pd00000010052953)

The place of residence during the census is Valløe, and they lived together with people from the saltworks (including the Tschudy family)

Interesting. Just two quick comments: Wallow Saltwerk = Vallø Saltverk (https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vallø_saltverk), Fredrickshald (Fredrikdhald) = today's Halden. (But perhaps you knew this already.)

Thanks for this - no I did not know that  - I have not researched all the place names but had a hunch that some may be different or misspelt....

Thank you for this...a very important point that Johan Henrik was not living in Norway in 1865 for the Census. ....sailing...

And thank you for the parent candidates reference and the point re the names ...The other one was restricted but that is okay. Stay well.

Kind regards, Stephen.
