1801 Census Finnås Hordaland

The record says Johannes and his family were living at the farm Qvalvog, in Finnås prestegjeld. Was this farm located in Bremnes, Bømlo, Moster, or Sveio? I can't seem to find the farm with this spelling. Is the spelling Kalavåg instead? (The Google searches suggest changing the spell to this.)

 

Ideally, I'd like to see if Johannes and his family are listed in the bygdebok ... but not sure which one would have the farm Qvavog. If someone could help me locate the right bygdebok and then let me know if Johannes and his family are mentioned in the book and what it says about them that would be great. I'd like to see if I can find his parents (and his wife's parents) but I can't seem to find their births in the Finnås parish church book.

In the 1801 census, the family includes Johannes, age 40; Anna Olsdatter, age 42, and their children: Guri, age 13, Anna, age 8, Pernilde, age 5, and Ola, age 2.

Is there a way for someone in the United States to access the Sveio bygdebok online? I'd like to look up the farm Qvalvog. Someone already did a lookup for this family, and the write up they sent me was for the farm Lyngbakken. I don't want to trouble someone else to do another lookup if I can access the book online on my own. I can't find Johannes or Anna in the church parish books. Thank you! David

I'm wondering ... Johannes Pedersen's wife, Anne, in the 1801 census has the last name Olsdatter and her death record also has Olsdatter, but the bygdebok says her last name was Torsdatter? Is Torsdatter a typo?

The bygde-book says he moved to Ørpetveit in 1805. In 1801 a different Johannes P. lives there with a different wife so that is wrong in the book.

Parents/birth:

She was born 08.04.1859. https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/8818/65 Don’t know why she is called Olesdatter since the census confirms they are in their first marriage, so it should be the same Anna. A probate is mentioned, but I could not find it in the register or the protocols, but it would probably not explain the surname.

Thank you. There was another Johannes Ervesvaag who was living in Fjelberg during the same time, and had three sons, Peder 1786, Isaac, 1791 and Iver, 1794. And I wonder if this is the Johannes Ervevaag who was married to Anne Thorsdatter.

 

It seems so odd that Anne's last name would change from Thorsdatter to Olsdatter during her life ... the census information (1801) and her death record say her name was Olsdatter. 

 

I think her children are probably mentioned in her estate. The bydegok only provide the particulars of what she owned at the time of death. One of the bygdeboks say that they were the parents of Johannes Johannesen, born about 1783, and the marriage record for Johannes and Anne Thorsdatter would be a year after this ... another reason I doubt that Anne Thorsdatter is the right one. Thanks for looking for the estate record and sorry you didn't find it. 

 

But I cannot find a marriage record for a Johannes Pedersen and Anne Olsdatter ... so it's confusing.

Probably not important, but I found an index file for probates who did not show up when I searched for the probate books. https://www.digitalarkivet.no/source/100035 . I am not able to read this, but recognize Anne and the kids name.

Thank you so much! I read the probate information, and it actually proves that their son, Johannes Johannesen (born about 1782 or so), was their son. Also, the younger children's guardian was Johannes Olsen Sundfør ... who was one of the sponsors of Johannes Johannesen's marriage to Marthe Pedersen Sundfør (the other sponsor was Marthe's foster father). The probate records were amazing ... thank you again! David
