Birth/christening location

I have a general question regarding recording birth and christening locations.  

 

What is the proper (or maybe the best) way to record the location of a birth?

Most birth records will give the residence of the parents.  Would it be accurate to record the birth location as the residence?  

Also, how should the residence location be recorded?  

For example, Berthe Erlandsdatter was born to Erland Halvorsen and Anne Davidsdatter whose residence was Myren under Sundet, Sødorp sokn, Oppland.

If the parent's residence is used to determine the birth location, should the format be Myren under Sundet, Sødorp sokn, Oppland.  I know that the sokn is an religious division, but isn't it also a geographical area?  Or maybe the municipality is more appropriate.

I'd like to hear others weigh in on this.

 

Also, for the baptism/christening location, would the proper location be the sokn and fylke, as this would normally take place in the sokn's church building?

 

I'd like to hear your views.

The question is a too general...

First, the answer depends on time: 1700s? 1900s? 2000s?

Second, "recording" can mean different things.

Maybe I can be more specific with an example.

 

Mads Johansen was born on 24 Februay 1835.  He is listed in the Stjørdal prestegjeld ministerialbok 1833-1844 (1714Q).

His record shows that his parent's residence was Bremset(h), a farm in Hegra sokn.

In 1835, Hegra sokn was a part of the Stjørdal prestegjeld, which was located in Nordre Trondhjem amt.

I believe Nordre Trondhjem amt became Nord Trøndelag fylke in 1918. (and Nord Trøndelag merged with Sør Trøndelag to become Trøndelag in 2018).

For my own records, I would normally enter the location of his birth as Bremseth, Hegra, Nordre Trondhjem amt because that was the name of the area at the time of his birth.

As an alternative, Mads' birth location could be entered as Bremset, Hegra sokn, Nord Trøndelag which would make finding his birth record in Digitalarkivet easier.

 

I would interested to know how others enter birth locations in their private databases and why.

Many times I will be faced with a decision as to how much information I am willing to try and cram into the Family Tree profile of the person I am working on. I then must make a decision do I want to include all of the location data I know or just the most pertinent facts. Also many time you need to pick a county (fylke) name. I will usually go with the names of the counties and parishes found in the current DIGITAL ARCHIVES.

Here is an example from my Ancestry.com tree. 

 

Olav Larsen Høgeli

1837–1892

BIRTH 19 JUN 1837 • Støylsjordet-Høgeli, Åmli, Aust-Agder, Norway

DEATH 16 APR 1892 • Skjaeggedal, Åmli, Aust-Agder, Norway

 

Støylsjordet is the sub-farm (husmannsplass) under Høgeli farm. I could have chosen to leave that out and just go with Høgeli. 

 

 Åmli is the parish (prestegjeld) but he was really  born and died in the sub-parish (sogn or sokn) of Tovdal , I ignored that for no good reason. But for a wedding I would usually  include the sub-parish as the couple would have likely been married in the Tovdal church and not the Åmli church.

 

When he died he was living on the neighboring farm of Skjaeggedal so the Norwegian death record reflects that fact. 

 

I always use the older  names of the counties (fylke) because I think it would be impossible to locate the original records otherwise. So I use Aust-Agder instead of the current name of Agder. 

 

But I also suspect I would deviate from the rules I used for this particular profile from time to time but I do the best I can and I can live with that. 

 

I use the dictionary https://otjoerge.wordpress.com/norwegian-american-dictionary/p-t/#P for the spelling where needed. 

 

I also try to remember that I am making this Family Tree for mostly my relatives who would be in the main native English speakers. 

 

In the end you need to try and be consistent in what you do but do not worry so much about the deviations, I have been working on my family tree for about twenty years and it contains over 6000 people so deviations from consistency can likely be found.
