19th Century Divorce Procedures

On a few traveling documents my grandfather stated that he arrived in New York in 1892 (aged 7 or 8). That was the year that his parents divorced.

Hopefully the following question will be answered here.

During that time period, did both parties (the man and the woman) have to sign the divorce papers?

If yes, that would explain why a 7 or 8-year-old made a brief voyage to the USA (with his mother).

Since divorce was rare at that time, perhaps a judgement was made and that was the end of it. No signing of papers.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

As I understand it, both possibilities excisted, you could seek approval from the department of justice thru county officials, or receive judgement in a civil case. Arkivverket have the following information in norwegian: https://www.arkivverket.no/dokumentasjon/ekteskap-og-skilsmisse/kom-i-gang-separasjon-og-skilsmisse#!#block-body-2-0-2 .

Thank you very much!! It was very informative.

I now know that it could have been a grant or judgement. A small note about the divorce has the word Dom. I believe Dom=Judgement ( a civil court judgement in this case )
