Under you'll find the church books, couple No. 62

You are not likely to the  grave of a seaman so long ago.

Your family seems to have lived in Kristiansand for some time. Here is a link to the marriage of the parents Hans and Christine Marie . See nr 30

This might be him in the 1865 Census. I notice in this and another record he is referred to as a Snedker  ie a carpenter. Addresses are given in the census record. Hard to know if they are findable today or not.

In the 1875 Census the family is listed as living at 0100 Henrik Wergelandsgt. 109

That would seem to be the same address as listed for a Snedker Christian Hansen who died 3 October 1899 in Kristiansand. House number seems to be slightly different bu?

It is possible to find. The “Ø 32de Qvartal, house 354b” from the 1865 census and the “Consumtions gade 354b” from the 1870 census is the same house as “109 Henrik Wergelands gade” from the 1875 census. The number “354b” is not an address, but a counting number in the census district. “Consumtions gade” changed name to “Henrik Wergelands gade” some time in the 1870s. Since I am original from Kristiansand and visiting here these days, I just looked up the addresses “109 Henrik Wergelands gade” and “98B Henrik Wergelands gade” (from Kristian Hansen’s death record) in an old city map from 1887. I also went over to Henrik Wergelands gate to check.

109 Henrik Wergelands gade will now be 75 Henrik Wergelands gate. Unfortunately, the house standing there now is a modern apartment building.

98B Henrik Wergelands gade is just across the street from number 109, and is now 76B Henrik Wergelands gate, and the house standing there seems to be from your 3rd great grandfather’s time.

Since your ancestors lived in the center of Kristiansand, their parish church was Domkirken (=the cathedral), and their cemetery was Kristiansand Kirkegård (Kristiandsand’s cemetery).

The cemetery is situated just west of Kristiansand center, an easy 10-15 minutes’ walk from the cathedral. Just before the cemetery you will meet a busy intersection. Use the pedestrian underpass. The entrance is from the road called Setesdalsveien. The part of the cemetery surrounding the chapel is the oldest one.

The cathedral is situated in the middle of Kristiansand center. The old cathedral burned down in 1880 and was rebuilt in 1885. Parts of the walls and the baptismal font is from the old cathedral.

Kristiansand has a small city center. It is made up from 11 streets going SW-NE and 7 streets going NW-SE. Your family lived in the north-eastern part of the city. This part of Kristiansand is the “old town”, locally called “Posebyen”. This area is especially picturesque, with one and two story wood houses all painted white.  Posebyen’s borders are approximately east from Festningsgata, south from Henrik Wergelands gate, west from Elvegata and north from Rådhusgata. Most of the houses here are between 150 and 250 years old, and I estimate that some 75 % of these houses where here also in your 3rd great grandfather’s days.

I have roots in the same area. My 2nd great parents lived all their adult life just one street SW of your family (Festningsgata), and my great grandparents lived two streets SE (Gyldenløves gate). My grandparents took over their house, and my father was born there. Both my 2nd great grandfather (born 1817) and my great grandfather (born 1863) were carpenters, so they probably crossed paths with your 3rd great grandfather.

Christer, are you in town today? We are planning on seeing the places you listed if you’d like to meet up at one.

I am sorry, but I returned to Halden, where I live, yesterday. Enjoy your stay in Kristiansand 🙂
