Alfred Hagen, a grandson of Thore, sent me a letter on 29 April 1993.  This letter was published in People's History of the Hallinglag of America 1907-2007 on pages 35-36.  This is what Alfred wrote about his grandfather:

"Now you asked about the Hagens.

Well, my grandfather Thore Asle Hagen came from Torpo in 1880.  He was confirmed in the stave kirke and then he left for the United States to try to find his girlfriend.  He made it to Fertile, Minn., and then went on to Minot when the rail line was completed.  On the way he was mugged and all his money was stolen.  He had been left on the railroad tracks where a conductor found him and helped him get back to health.  Then he decided to go back to Fertile to Ottilia Nordal whom he eventually married. ....

...The first stamps I got were from Grandpa Thore Hagen and he had letters going back to the 1880s.  But he died in 1941 and no one kept up contact with Grandpa Hagen's sister until after 1946 or 47 and then they only wrote once a year for a very few years...."

So one more accident for Thore. As the "Aal bygdebok" says he had a lot of them !
