I am not sure, too many irregularities in the censuses. In the 1900 census, John Senior lives in the same house as John Junior and Bertha S. and it says that Senior is the father of Junior and that both came to America in 1854. In the 1880 census it says that Senior is the father-in-law.

It might be, in this case, both are true, like in the movie Chinatown, my sister, my daughter etc.

But if John Smith sr did come in 1854, Wisconsin, even northern Wisconsin was pretty well established at that point.  John sr.'s age fluctuates a bit, too in the various census years.  In 1907 his age is touted as 103 but in the 1905 census he is listed as 91.  If you study the Findagrave listings for the family in Calvary cemetery in Deer Park, the majority are stylistically the same, almost as if they were made at one time.  But Bertha sr died in 1874.  I was hoping that there might be something in the transcribed copies or the original of the early death records in St. Croix county but I went through the transcribed copies yesterday and found none for Bertha, sr.  In that case, I wonder if the ELCA both Norwegian and Swedish pastoral acts databases at Ancestry might have a record of a funeral for her.  Sometimes the early Norway born & trained pastors are more exacting and include more information than just that the deceased was born in Norway.  You subscribe correct?  Both datasets are searchable with their own independent search engine and if you do subscribe I'd suggest using it.  Sometimes the main search engine doesn't find everything or places every thing valuable near the beginning of the search results list.

I did go through the guardianship records of Henry county, Illinois online at familysearch.org but was disappointed to not find a record for the minor children of Enoch.  There was a large colony of Swedish settlers in Henry co at Bishop's Hill, so lots of Scandinavian sounding names in the guardianships but none for this search.  Likely, Enoch didn't own much when he died, enough to leave behind and create problems for Bertha and the kids requiring a guardian to oversee.

I think we have solved the puzzle, although we are missing the marriage between John Smith and Bertha (Betsy or Betty Alison). Enok and Bertha's first child Alif, who died in 1850, is named after his grandfather Eilef, Enok's father. Thomas is named after his maternal grandfather Torjus, Bertha's father. Berta Sophia is named after her mother, Bertha Serine. Everything fits together in such a way that it is not confusing. The years and age match well. Who the parents of John Smith Jr. are plays little role in this context.

Thanks so far. I am a member of Ancestry. com, but I have not found the death of Bertha Serine, as a source. Only Find a grave, as a source. Otherwise. Smith is perhaps a surname, which was used, after they came from Sweden and Denmark. In one of the censuses it says that John Smith came from Sweden in 1859.

Here is a map of St. Croix county, Wisconsin from the book Norske Lutherske Menigheter i Amerika.  Unfortunately, the Lutheran churches in the more northern part of the county were very small and it appears none too vigorous.

Here is another news story about John Smith, with the byline on this one it appears he died 30 Sept 1907, this is in the Stillwater (Minn.) Daily Gazette on 1 Oct 1907 page 5 col 3:
