Great-Grandmother's DEATH/BURIAL records

My great- grandmother was: Anna Marie Mathiesen ( born Knudsen) DOB: 25 Dec 1876 in Drammen (see attached). Her parents were, Svend Knudsen & Wilhelmine Carlson. I was told she died in 1921, and one cousin thought it was in March of that year.  The 1920 census shows her living in Holmestrand (see attached).  As it is past the 100 year privacy period I believe her death/burial records should be available, but I cannot find them anywhere and I checked several other nearby parish books, not just from Holmestrand. According to USA naturalization records in 1923 her husband, Ludvig Hagbart Mathiesen, was listed as a widower.

Any ideas on how I might find her death/burial records?  I haven't had any luck finding a newspaper obituary notice either. I also tried contacting a couple of churches, but never had any response.  I would like to know when she died, if possible what she died from, and where she is buried.  I would appreciate any help, or suggestions.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you

Sven,

Thank you SO much for this record.  I was not aware of these "sheriff's reports"; nobody had ever mentioned them to me before (not that I would have thought to look at them for this death record.  Now I will work on trying to translate all the information.  I can easily make out the names of her family members and a few other words here and there.  It appears since this isn't a 'standard' parish death record something else happened with her death.  I really appreciate your having broken through this major brick wall concerning my family genealogy work. I have wondered for years about this information. Your rapid assistance is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Leah Snider

The death record protocol from that periode is not yet digitally published.. All deaths are reported to the probate court administering the Estate Act. It can be a private or public probate and the probate court will issue a certificate of probate. In larger cities, the probate court receives the death notices and in smaller places the sheriff’s office, as a part of that office’s administrative duties.

Anne-Lise,

Thank you very much for this clarification about the courts and sheriff's reports.  I also appreciate the dictionary of judicial terms in both Norwegian & English that you attached.  It will be helpful since online translating tools don't often do a good job with special terms ( legal, or medical for example).

Sincerely,

Leah

 Sven,

Thank you for this additional information.  I kept trying to translate, "bleksot" and wasn't sure if I mas just misspelling it; such specialized terms are difficult for online translating tools to handle! I am not familiar with, 'Chlorosis,' but it sounds like some sort of severe anemia/iron deficiency. I appreciate this.

Sincerely,

Leah
