Looking for any records in Norway for my great grandfather Charles Andrew Cedar born 1844 in Oslo Kristiania. Sea captain by trade and settled in London England. Father’s name Adolf Cedar trade was a Goldsmith. Nothing else known about Charles before he settled  in England. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Laura

It probably was not Cedar in Norway. Perhaps Sater or Sæther.

His name in Norway would not be Charles Andrew. Perhaps Carl Anders (or Andreas).

The surname was probably a farm name. In Norway, Charles Andrew might have been known as another last name, such as Adolfsen (if his father was Adolf)

Hi Richard,

Thank you for highlighting those areas. I’ll investigate further. Much appreciated.

Hello Laura, the rules of this site require that you use your full name. Here is a link to how to accomplish that name change. The link is to the instructions in English.

For what its  worth, there are a few Family Trees on Ancestry.com that connect  to a Adolph Cedarwall  born in Sweden. There are not many sources that are given in these trees for that name  but I will post a few here. Could be a wild goose chase but we do not have much to go on that I can find in the Norwegian sources.  And so far no way to connect the Cederwall family from Sweden to the Charles Andrew Cedar in England.

The trees make a line from

Adolf Bernhard Cederwall

1816–1858

BIRTH 25 AUG 1816 • Vårdinge, (B) Sweden

DEATH 6 MAJ 1858 • Hedvig Eleonora Stockholm

Would be nice if someone could find out what his occupation was?

As far as I can see, Charles Andrew married in 1879. Is there any information on the groom's father in a marriage certificate?

Do you know when Charles Andrew arrived in the UK and is there an immigration record for him?

I guess this must be his wife in the 1881 census:

Re - Charles Andrew Cedar b1844 Oslo Kristiania Norway d1898 London England

Thanks everyone for your information. Some details I already know regarding the London connections. I’ll investigate what you’ve sent as much as possible. Any other information will be much appreciated. 😊👍

This is only a possibility, nothing guaranteed

Sœter or Seter are Norwegian names (farm and surname).

American English = Sɛdər - easily translated to Cedar.

According to an online map there is an Oslo suburb called Sœter

According to information on Ancestry.com - Adolf Ceder was born in 1815 in Sweden.

The surname Ceder (notice spelling) is in Sweden.

I will continue the research.

My guess is his lastname (Carl Andreas or Ole Andreas)? starts with Söder, and is of swedish decent. Born 14 Jan 1843 or 1844. Both years are on his english shiprecords.

I am having some trouble pasting the picture of page 2. It lists the ships he has worked on.

He was permanently in England from 1869.

He should be in our 1865 cencus, as Adolf* or Søder*

Ship and port of registry

Linda – Christiania 1863-1866 - 3 years 8 months (salary slip)

Lerkan- Christiania 1866-1867- 1 year 3 months

Halden – Brevik -1868-1869, 9 months (Telemark)

From 1869, a number of English vessels.

Lärkan, Lerkan, Larkan,  Dampskibet Halden, are mentioned in newspapers on nb.no.

Fredrikshald / Halden is also mentioned.

The records for mariners and ships mentioned, are probably the the best source of new info.

There are many good helpers on the forum, who can navigate in the archive of shiprecords.

I don't know if this is the correct person, but I will post it here. It's about a Charles Cederwall, sea captain. It mentions, Sweden, Norway, England.
