Soneve Pedersen

Hello,

I am seeking information regarding my ancestor (Soneve Pedersen, Birth: Dec 1829 in Norway) . The 1900 US census lists her as a widow and her husband Lars Hoff was also born in Norway but no year listed. They had at least one son, Otto Hoff (born Jan 1873 in Norway). She immigrated from Norway in 1891.

Any information would be greatly appreciated about where they lived in Norway, other Norwegian Ancestors, immigration details, etc.

Thanks!!

This is probably the baptism record for Otto:

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070131660672

(and a transcription: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/255/pd00000028559428)

The mother's name is transcribed wrong: the original says Sønnov.

The record states that Otto is born January 6th, and baptised February 9th 1873 in Lillehammer church (The L at the beginning of the road gives the specific church within the parish.) The parents are tenant farmer Lars Kristiansen and wife Sønnov Pedersdatter under the farm Søndre Hoff. (It was quite common to take your farm name as last name during this era.) Lars is 47 years old, and Sønnov is 44. They were married in 1852.

This is the marriage record (line 13): https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/8934/266

And transcription: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/327/pv00000009117801 (again with some mistakes)

They were married June 3rd 1852 in Fåberg parish (same as for Otto's baptism).

He is listed as Soldier Lars Christianssøn (Alternativ spelling of Kristiansen). Birthplace is the farm Aule, and at the time of marriage he is at Nedre(?) Traasæter. He is 25 years old. Sønnov Pedersdatter is listed as 23 years old from Berg.

Here is a transcription of the family at the census is 1865: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/census/person/pf01038065005760

They are living at the tenant farm Hoffslien øvre, which is under the farm Hoff Søndre. They have had 5 sons so far.

Kind regards,

Kristian

Thank you very much Kristian_Vestli and Bjørn A Løkken. This information is exactly what I was looking for and am excited to share it with my family. I'm very impressed and grateful for the time you took to research this for us.

I do see in the 1900 US Census for my Grandmother (Clara Hoff) who was 4 years old at the time that the family was living in Westby, Wisconsin which matches with the information you provided.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MM2J-QK1

The family went by the last name of Hoff in America, which makes sense given the farm name Søndre Hoff you provided Kristian.

Many thanks for this information!

Tusen takk!

Lars Christiansen birth 21 june 1827 at the upsitter place / crofters place Huse farm in Faaberg in Oppland County and baptizm 24 june 1827 Lars's  parents ; Christian Huse and wife Mari . No patronymikon on them .

Nr 48 https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070603630623

Transkribert https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/255/pd00000038348693

This is the best candiate to Lars Christiansen parents . This because of the use of the name / patronymikon . Norwegian name traditions . If Lars was their first born son it was naturally that he was named up after his grandfather who in this case was a Lars since his father was a Christian Larsen

Lars Christiansen parents fully name was ; Bachelor Christian Larsen living at Hovsveen ( Åsheim ) farm in Øyer in Fåberg and Servantgirl Mari Haagensdatter living at the Bjørstad farm in Fåberg  ( 1 norwegian kilometer from where i grow up 🙂 )

Wedding nr 27 right side https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070603630731

Transkribert https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/327/pv00000009010364  Niels Olsen Bjørstad and Johan Olsen Hovsveen is NOT their parent's as the transcripton says , but they are the witness .

Synnøve ( Sønnøve ) Pedersdatter birth 26 desember 1829 below the farm Fliflet in Fåberg in Oppland , and baptizm 29 desember . Synnøve's parents : Peder Fliflet and wife Karen . No patronymikon on them

Nr 8 https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070603630675

Transkribert ( Wrong farm name ) https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/255/pd00000038212212

Synnøve Pedersdatter parent's is one of this two ;

Nr 1 https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/327/pv00000009010484 Peder Pedersen Sætherengen and Karen Hansdatter Sæther

Nr 2 https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/327/pv00000009010105  Peder Olsen Prestegården and Karen Olsdatter . This Karen is named as Høchlien ( = Hauklien med Stræte farm ) in Fåberg .

The other names in this transcription is the names of the witness and NOT their parents .

It is possible to find Synnøves parent's if you follow their children to candidate 1 and 2 . The cause to this problem is that they did not use patronymikon on the parents when their children birth was written into the protocolls , just farm names , and many of them moved around from farm to farm as uppsitters / crofters . This was typical for the church books for Fåberg at this time .

Church books 1700 - 1900 for the Fåberg area .

I attched a map for you which shows an overview of farms in Fåberg in 1578 and forward towards our time .

Good luck 🙂

Thank you so much for this information. It is very interesting and I am grateful for you sharing this with me.

Is this the location of the Bjørstad farm? We are planning our first visit to Norway in September and would love to visit this area where my ancestors lived. It looks like such a beautiful area, I wonder why they ever left, but it was a different time.
