Grethe, you have helped me before. Thank you so much

Right now I am in the process of trying to ascertain "if" the son Ditlef did end up in Pensacola, Florida. I have contacted the Historic Trust Archives in Pensacola, Flordia.

I won't give up, ha ha.

Grethe, I have been searching in the National Library (newspapers) to see if there were any articles about Ditlef being lost at sea or a death notice (like the one attached for another relative). Do you have any other suggestions as to where to look or what newspapers to concentrate on?

Ditlef

I have not be able to find any information on the "missing son" Ditlef in the newspapers. Please note, that the digitised newspapers at the National Library website are not complete. I cannot tell where you may search for further information.

Here is the confirmation record from 1879 for Ditlef Møller Ditlefsen - # 16:

Rogaland county, Haugesund in Haugesund, Torvastad, Parish register (official) no. A 1 (1878-1885), Confirmation 1879, Page 95
https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/6265/32419/6

In the 1865 state census I find young Ditlef and his parents living in Sveio municipality, (former) Hordaland county:

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01038226001600

https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/38226/105

Have you managed to trace Ditlef jr in any of the US censuses?

Where did you get the information that he might have ended up in Pensacola, Florida?

Ditlofa Albertine

As far as I can see from Albertine's death record she also had a daughter Ditlofa, age 34, who was married to Knut Johnsen, residence: America. Do you know where this couple lived?

Ditlofa Albertine Møller (Vaage) emigrated from Bergen in 1903: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8/pe00000000703577. Her residence was Skånevik (Skaanevig), where I also have found her in the 1900 state census:

But then I have found this information in the newspaper Haugesund Avis 3 september 1929 at nb.no:

Thank you Grethe.

Ditlofa was my great grandmother and I live next door to the home purchased by her and Knud in 1918. I still own that home/property.

I am waiting to hear from the organization that is looking into Ditlef, Jr. It just so happens that a newspaper article that was given to me on this forum mentioned "Pensacola". I actually wrote to the Norwegian Salvation Army and they replied - no one responded.  Maybe I will get lucky and the archivist in Florida will find something. He most likely changed his name in America but I was hoping they might have a record of him in Pensacola. There is a large Norwegian community there.

This is who I contacted:

Historic Trust Special Collections Archivist
University Archives & West Florida History Center Digital Collections Archivist
University of West Florida

Pensacola, FL 32514

Once again, thank you for everything. Everyone on this site if always so helpful. I try not to bother the "forum" and do things myself but when I have reached the end of my guesses, I reach out.

Regards,

Barbara

I wonder if anyone has searched the emigration records for Ditlef. Perhaps starting from 1878 forward.

I have searched on Ancestry.com and Family Search but could not find anything on Ditlef Jr. The University in Florida asked me if I knew what boat Ditlef had been on when he allegedly got off in Pensacola. I know from looking back through my previous conversations with the forum that no record of the ship he was on could be found. I guessed and told the University that it could have been the Bark Sherwood because I think that is the boat his future brother in law (my great grandfather Knud Johannessen was on in 1891. I seem to recall it looked as though they both got off in Pensacola.

Nice hearing from you Anton - been a while. I have really fine tuned my ancestry tree and have finally unlocked some mysteries as to my granduncles! It took 5 years but I kept at it!

Regards,

Barbara
