Looking for some family... Olsen/Andersen

Not sure if this is even close to the correct forum, but here goes:

I have a great-great-grandfather by the name of Harry J. Olsen born Nov. 25 1860, from Arendal. His wife, who he married in the US, was Marie E. Andersen, from Fredrickheld. (Probably having a father from Norway, and mother from Sweden) I have ALL information on the US side of their 1890/1891 immigration, but drawing a blank on the Norwegian/Swedish side. Any ideas are appreciated : ) Thanks so much! Devon Taylor 412 500 2520

Do you have their California death certificates?  Usually parents are named on them.

Do you have their marriage record?  Sometimes parent names are given on them as well.

Here they are in 1910 US Federal census at Oakland, Alameda county, California:

In the 1875 Census posted by Kari Aabelvik is the mother of your Hans Johan a Barbara Rasmussen. The husband in that record must be her second husband and the father of your Hans Johan would be deceased. His name was Halvor Severin Olsen.

This is the link to the baptism record for your Hans. They probably lived at one time or another on the Merdø Island, which is near the harbor of Arendal.

Halvor Severin Olsen died in Dec of 1865 which is why he is not in the 1875 Census

You should be able to follow the ancestors of Harold J Olsen back in time to some where in the 1700's using the various sources available to you. I will look a little more tomorrow. Finding info on his wife Marie Anderson might be a bit more difficult.

Tromøya and Merdø are Islands lying off of Arendal that you can see in the distance from Arendal.

 Tromøy or Tromøya.

Tromøya
The largest island in Southern Norway, located across the harbor from Arendal. It's nicknamed "The pearl of Southern Norway"

Merdø
A historic island with family-friendly beaches, a classic harbor, and a coastal museum. It's accessible by ferry and private boat in the summer

I see that the marriage record for your ancestors Rasmus Aanonsen and Ingebor Nielsdatter shows that the marriage took place in 1827 in the Den Norske Kirke, Arendal, Aust-Agder, Norway. That is the large church with the tall steeple shown in the middle of the picture of Arendal that I posted above.

A map of Arendal and the islands. Tromøya is the big island and is labelled as such. Merdo is not labelled but is the small island just below the darker blue dot.

Just some nitpicking – the current church («with the tall steeple») was buildt in 1883. So this (picture/drawing from 1800) was the church in which they married 1827. 🙂

Here is some information on the emigration of the sisters

Ingeborg Ragnhild Olsdatter emigrated form Arendal in 1888. Nr 3. Found in the parish records for Tromøy

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070108610287

Probably her sister Geirtrude Mathilda also in the same list, Nr 10 1888. She is listed as Hustrue which would mean she is married.

Likely this one

The US Census records for your Harry J Olson indicate an emigration year of 1890. But here is an emigration record for a Hans Johan Olsen emigrating in 1893 to Oakland. His residence is also given as Oakland so may have traveled back and forth a few times.

This is likely the family of Rasmus Aanonsen born about 1797 according to his marriage record. Location is in the Arendal area and father Aaron Rasmusen is the only one with that name in all of Aust-Agder in the 1801 Census.
