Looking for some family... Olsen/Andersen

Thanks again gang for the input! I appreciate every word! Yep, regarding the California destination, it seems to revolve around Captain Harry Olsen, the Great-Great-Grandfather that was working on the sea until his death in Oakland. He raised a family there with Marie E Andersen (that name can take many paths of variation, and crosses the Norwegian/Swedish research line) They did well for themselves, and raised many children, including my Great Grandmother Marie Gertrude Olsen, who I had the pleasure of knowing as a child. Captain Harry Olsen, and consequently the Norwegian side of my family, seems to have made a B-line for the west coast, the line of work as a captain of large sailing ships, tugs, barges, ferries, etc. surely had something to do with it.

 

(For some rabbit hole intrigue, I have found two completely different shipwreck stories involving a Harry Olsen. Harrowing to say the least. Harry Olsen is not a rare name then or now, but some vitals line up suspiciously. Side note: I was raised near Oakland, CA myself, knowing a decent amount about my roots, including the 1/8th Norwegian that came from my father's side. Coincidentally, in  1998 I was offered a job in Europe, first Warsaw, then Stockholm, then Norway. There I stayed in Oslo for about 15 years, and have a son who is going to school there still. I live in Pittsburgh, PA now, but I travel to Norway quite often : )

 

So after all of this time, I am just peeling back the layers of my Scandinavian roots, on behalf of my Norwegian/American son : ) ...I tell him on occasion that he is "9/16ths Norwegian"

 

Well, I have a few leads on the Marie E Andersen... Seems she may have been working as house help of one sort or another, and her route seems may have been from southern Sweden, up through perhaps the Ostland Norway/Sweden border area around Fredricksheld. One US census states her father as Norwegian, and mother as Swedish. I have a few other leads from the Norwegian official genealogy pages, hopefully I can decipher that pesky Scandinavia-to-US emigrant name translation. : )

 Well this is likely a long shot but her birth place of Hisøy is promising. Hisøy is an island just off Arendal.

The Ole from Holt is probably the least likely based on geography. 

 

The Ole born in 1787 has the same parents as Ole who was born in 1790 so the first Ole likely died young and his name used for the Ole born in 1790. This is the candidate that the Tree on Family Search went with.

Now if we get lucky, we should   be able to trace the Ingebor Wroldsdatter family back in time just based on the uniqueness of the name World or Vrold or some variation of that.. Here is the family in 1801 Census. They are stuffing a lot of people in one long list for this group so you have to scroll a bit to get to the family.

I've been looking through Swedish Ancestry material, and it seems all convert to "Maria" ...So if baptized in Sweden, it would likely be different... Also with the Andersson/Anderson vs. Andersen... I believe I have her pegged as Marie E. Andersen upon migration to the US via SS. Britannic in 1890, perhaps a trip a couple years before and after. ...I recall some stories about some of the "the sisters that came over, some went back to Norway/Sweden, some came back to the US and had forgotten their english, and some stayed back in Sweden to farm." Also, there was always a hint of Harry Olsen being from one side of the fjord, and Mari E. being from the other... and the Frederikstad/Halden/Fredriksheld fits that bill... The Swedish connection cant be ignored, given the cross border fluidity of the time... If the one census report was correct, it was specifically stated that her mother was from Sweden, and Father from Norway. Furthermore, as she was apparently eager to head for the US, she was working towards her ~1890 departure, and had no husband or children in Norway or Sweden... apparently : )
