Looking for some family... Olsen/Andersen

Also, I have found a great many appearances on Newspapers.com, searching for : Hans Olsen, Hans J Olsen, Harry Olsen, Marie Andersen, and Marie Olsen, etc. Also searching for Captain Harry Olsen/Hans Olsen, as he was a prolific sailor and captain.

I think there is something to her clearly being referred to as "Marie Emilie Andersen" in marriage announcements, linking the "M.E. Andersen" to the "Marie Emilie Andersen". Furthermore, through family, and tracing census' etc. I can trace their residences around Oakland over the years, and have gleaned that her address was 1429 Adeline St. in Berkeley, confirmed by the Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland. This connects to one of several death announcements and obits, which state her memorial to be at the Chapel of the Flowers on Adeline St.

The cemetery had other very helpful info, and some slightly confusing info, which wasn't too surprising.

If it's any help, it looks like that index is pointing to: Book "T", Page: 245

Alameda County Clerk-Recorder's Office

According to Handybook, Alameda county marriage records begin 1854 and are kept at the county clerk's office, as well as some death records from 1905-1988.

California has a vital records department from which you can order death certificates.

or from outside vendors:

It appears that her family members nipped back and forth into Sweden.  Perhaps the Swedish ELCA records have her marriage?

Well, if you are satisfied that you "know" everything there is to know about Marie, that's up to you.  But personally, since of her closeness to you generationally, going the full distance to get some of these records not available through the online services are the ones needed to "extinguish" doubt about her and to give you imprimatur of having taken all the steps. Besides you are hoping for the unknowns  in these records to add more flesh on the bones.

What was confusing about the information at the cemetery?

Thanks for all of that info, I appreciate it! Yep, my vested interest in solving the riddle entirely leaves me still searching for even more definitive proof : ) ...FYI, As you may have read, I am originally from the Oakland area, live in PA now. I did however live in Norway for about 15 years earlier in my career... and also have a 9/16ths Norwegian son studying in Oslo now (his 9/16ths includes the 1/8th that I have on my side) So this process is definitely letting me hone my language skills even more! Regarding odd info from the cemetery, they had her age as 72, but that would put her birth year at 1867, when the data says it should be 71... she also apparently died on Dec 31st 1939, and was interred on Jan 3rd 1940 . (Coincidentally, Harry's father died on Dec 31st in Merdø.) Concerning her stated age, there could be something up with the death date, perhaps arbitrary for some reason... Her headstone reads 1868 as the birth year, which would make her 71. Furthermore, the "Dot Matrix" death records from the county say she has birthday of February 3rd, and is 72 years old, which is entirely confusing, as she has stated her birthday as Oct/1868 multiple times previously. (Feb 3 is a completely new date in this search, not corresponding to any other doc. Furthermore, that birthdate doesn't correspond with any other Marie in Norway or Sweden in any of my searching.) Both of their ages have drifted here and there, referring to stated ages on census' etc. But there is enough consistency and contextual explanation to draw a line through them... (they are always ~8 years apart, depending on the birthday fall... I knew his confirmed b-day from family, as Nov 25 1860... consistent census data... etc. )

I'll look into the county office for the missing marriage cert. More to come!

There is a Church in Oakland found in the

U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Swedish American Church Records, 1800-1947 in Ancestry.com. It is called

  1. St Pauls Lutheran Church

https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/61584/?redirectFor=db.aspx

I did not have any luck in searching at that site. But searching the transcribed records in either of the two ELCA sites is not easy and it is easy to miss the person one wants.  The best way to search but a laborious one is page by page.

I'll have to take a close look at the Cunard Line pic from above... I don't know of a sister living in the US, but I can imagine Marie, and family, traveling back and forth from time to time. FYI: I believe that there was also a "Marie Elisabeth Andersen" born in that family in 1866, but died at 9 months, as far as I can tell. Regarding sisters, it's a bit confusing, because of the fact that Marie was born to a Norwegian father and Swedish mother, and that the family was moving from Sweden into Norway for a span, then back to Sweden. The family relocates, and she logs a move from Norway back to Sweden, then appears to have taken a ship overseas, perhaps working in Norway/Sweden for a time...

Regarding the Cunard doc, that jives that she says she has been traveling to the US for 9 years... and the fact that she says she is going home... She would have already been married, so there is a question why she is marked "from USA" then scratched out to say Swedish. Otherwise, age seems to be exactly correct, destination makes sense also...

So, do you think there is enough information to tie this 'Marie' to the 'Marie Emilie Andersen', daughter of Andreas Andersen (NOR) & Marie Elisabeth Ekerot (SWE) of Berg/Fredrikshald? ...given the information found on her through this lengthy thread : )

Yes now you have information to tie Marie from Oakland to Marie Emilie Andersen', daughter of Andreas Andersen (NOR) & Marie Elisabeth Ekerot (SWE) of Berg/Fredrikshald? .
