I am from America. I am attempting to find record of my great grandmother’s birth and birth parents. I have the following information on her:

Anna H. Dextrom

born: April 18, 1897

Alton, Nes, Buskerud, Norway

She came to America when she was 3 years old. This is all of the information I have.

thank you! Terry MacKay

I found a candidate in Vadsø, Finnmark. Not that close to Buskerud:

Vadsø sokneprestkontor, AV/SATØ-S-1325/H/Ha/L0007kirke: Ministerialbok nr. 7, 1896-1916, s. 7
Brukslenke for sidevisning: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20050216020199

No. 12: Anna Hansine. Born April 18 1897, baptized July 11. Parents are widow Anna Lisa Dekstrøm, born 1852, and unmarried shoemaker and fisherman Karl Gunneriussen, born 1864. Both parents lived in Vadsø.

In 1902 Anna and Anna Dekstrøm from Vadsø emigrated to Calumet, Michigan:
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8/pe00000000144810

At the same day a married couple, Jacob and Anna Dekstrøm also from Vadsø, emigrated to Brace, Wisconsin
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8/pe00000000144807

This is a possible geni profile of Anna Lisa:

https://www.geni.com/people/Anna-Lisa-Oinas/6000000193031079833

Married to Johan Petter Dekstrøm who died in 1891, with a son Jacob married to Anna Vogt

Also probably better to ask the question in this sub-form, where you probably will get more replies:

A rather complicated family but the information Morten and Jackie seem to fit well with the person you have asked about. There are several well documented family trees on Ancesty.com that cover this family. One part that seems to be a mystery is who was Karl Gummerius the father of Anna Hansine. I have posted part of the family tree that might provide some clarity of the family connections.

Records from Finland are a little out of my area of expertise, but here is a record from one of the better family trees on Ancestry.com. Looks to be a communion book.

"Emi Msrk parish, Communion book"
Or,
"Emi Msrk parish, Baptismal/Confirmation register"
Note: "Rippikirja" can be translated to either "Communion book" or "Baptismal/Confirmation register", depending on the context. I

The mother and father are present as well as the children including Anna Liisa Oinas born Jan 5, 1852. She is called Anna Liisa Hansdatter here as she is the daughter of Hans Simonpolka, When she went to America she used her first and middle name Anna Liisa and Oinas as her last name

There is a story in our family about the real father of Anna H. The news of her alleged father, Karl, was just discovered today with these emails. That was news to us! We knew her mother Anna L was not married when Anna H was born. Anna L was a widow.

It is a well known story in our family…but all of the elders in our family have passed away, and back in the day…they never questioned their elders to clarify the story. Three generations later…my generation, isn’t afraid to get clarification… but finding the information is proving to be difficult.

Well sure, out of respect or fear of getting their ears boxed, your elders were taught it was none of their business.

Here he is called "Julius Karl Gunneriusen" so you know his (most likely) father was named Gunnerius or possibly _________ Guneriussen.  Julius Karl or Karl was a shoemaker and a fisherman born in 1864 or 1852 and lived in Vadso also.

"Norway, Church Books, 1797-1958", , FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:68W3-CQG8 : Wed Mar 20 05:23:33 UTC 2024), Entry for Anna Hansine and Anna Lisa Dekstrøm, 11 Jul 1897.

You've got lots of clue to work.

So what do you know about Anne's siblings, sister Jennie, sister Mary and brother Peter.  Are any of them full siblings or half siblings from mother's side or father's side?  Sometimes cousins down the siblings lines, know more and are more willing to talk.  Peter, according to a newspaper article I read had as many as 25 children.  There could be a ton of cousin memory there...

In the 1910, 1920, 1930 censuses did Anna say her mother was born in Norway, and her father born in Norway, or Sweden, or Finland or?

In 1910 census she is living with her sister Jennie Lindbloom/ lindblom:

"United States, Census, 1910", , FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:ML5Q-6C6 : Sun Mar 10 12:59:03 UTC 2024), Entry for Andrew Lindblom and Jennie Lindblom, 1910.

You can always roll the dice and get your DNA done and see if anything pops.

I think that this is a mistranscription. Here is the transcription on DA

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/255/pd00000033731242

If you trace it back using the "Show Contact Page" you come to the orginal which shows father as skomager og fisker Karl Gunneriesen. The transcriber has misread fisker as Julius.

Nr 14

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20050216020199

The transcriber has also confused  the mother and father but that one is easier to see.

I liked Jackie's idea of using DNA as at least my search in the Norwegian records for a Karl Gunneriussen, born 1864 has not been successful. One thing is it seems to me that a search for a Norwegian or Swedish father in this case might be aided by the likelyhood that the number of Norwegian ancestors would be fairly small. Most of the evidence seems to show that the Ancestry of Anna L Oinas tends to be mostly if not wholly Finnish.

There is a problem in which the children of Johan Peter Dekstrom the husband of Anna Lisa Oinas seem to always identify him as having been born in Norway. Evidence from various other sources identify him as being born in Finland.

Here is the evidence that the partner of Anna Oinas was born in Finland

Trees in both Ancestry.com and Family Search identify him as

Johan Petter Dekström (Tuomas)

1843–1891

BIRTH 30 NOV 1843 • Lautiosaari, Kemin msrk, Finland

DEATH 25 JUL 1891 • Vadsø, Finnmark, Norge

This is likely the family in the 1875 Census in which a Johan Tuomas was born in Finland

I have not found any evidence that the children of Johan Petter Dekström (Tuomas) have married any one of Norwegian descent.  The original poster probably knows if there any other members in is direct family of Norwegian descent. Now if there is a marriage with someone of Swedish ancestry that could complicate the analysis. The name that we have of the father Gunneriussen could very well be Swedish.

But Terry if you obtain a DNA analysis of several family members from some site like Ancestry.com, used a lot by Americans. FamilytreeDNA linked to a Norwegian DNA project, and MyHeritage.com used a lot by Norwegians you might be able to get lucky and find some information about your great great grandfather.

For what it's worth the name Karl Gunnerius is a tough find. The only candidate I have come across worth some follow up is a Peder Karl Sofus Guneriusen from Hadsel Nordland. Here he is in the 1891 Census

Here are the census records for him. One interesting fact is in the 1910 Norwegian Census his occupation is listed as Fisker, gaardbruker, skomaker. The two occupations of fisker and skomagker are the same ones given for Karl Guneriussen in the birth record for Anna L.
