Could this be his brother Ellef - emigrating from Kristiania in 1885?

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8/pe00000000455334

Residence: Lunder, Ringerike.

In 1884 there is one Gunder Pedersen with residence Ringerike, who emigrates from Kristiania. Age 30...:

Destination is St. Paul.

Great find! Gunder's grandfather Ole Evensen and his father Peder Olsen lived on Nymoen Farm by 1836 until at least Peder's death in 1906, so it would make sense if this is my Gunder, that he adapted the name Nymoen. I tried to find a Newspaper Article or a corresponding death/burial entry, but did not find anything.

Another great find, which could also be him! Attached is the record. Accidently attached the wrong record, but yes, it's the one Matthias linked below. I looked up S/S Angelo and it looks like it belongs to Wilson Line transiting between Christiana-Christiansand-Hull, England. In theory, there should also be a corresponding emigration record when he left Christiansand, but I did not find it, maybe one for Hull, England as well. In theory, I would expect Gunder to appear on an Arrival Passenger list in New York, similar to his cousin/my 3rd great-grandfather, who made the journey to Minnesota in 1870. However, I was unable to find any of the entries. There should also be a 1885 Minnesota Census that Gunder should be listed in.

I had also been looking into Ellef Pedersen Kittelsbyeie, which your record may provide an explanation to him disappearing for a few years.

Most of the other records that you found, I already have, but thank you for researching! I will see if I can locate more records for Gunder and Ellef!

Hey Matthias! Yes, that's the picture that I wanted to attach above, but accidentally attached the record of another family member. Thank you for correcting me! I also saw him appearing to travel with this Andreas E. Halkinrud and researched Andreas, but did not find any more information on Gunder.

  • Andrew E Halkenrud's Marriage to Inger Torine Weme in Fergus Falls, Minnesota on 28 Dec 1886
  • Andrew E Halkenrud, born Jun 1855, in Queen, Polk, Minnesota on 1900 US Census with Inger T Halkenrud
  • Andreas E Halkinrud (~1855) with Inger, departing 26. Sep 1900 from Kristiansand

I am trying to find the 1885 and 1895 Minnesota Census (Minnesota, U.S., Territorial and State Censuses, 1849-1905) for Andreas/Andrew, because I haven't found the candidate: Gunder's 1885 Minnesota Census (Minnesota, U.S., Territorial and State Censuses, 1849-1905).

Three additional hints:

With that I looked for the candidate's 1885 Census in Crookston, Polk County, and in Fergus Falls, Otter Tail County in Minnesota, but did not find anything that fits. I only found these Gunders:

They might also have traveled from England through Quebec to Minnesota.

@Anton Hagelee or @Jackie K Marler - Are either of you able to find the passenger lists for Gunder or Ellef?

Probably him, not a female and Nymoen as a last name.

Difficult to find Gunder but this may be Andreas. There is no age listed and the 2 falls in the full fare column

So my best guess is that your Gunder Pedersen is traveling with Andreas E. Halkinrud, but is not listed separately on the ships manifest.

Great find! I agree, probably him, he does seem to have come back from the US eventually, although, I don't know when. Above is the death entry in 1943.

I am not sure where Ellef was from 1885 to 1943, but there is an article about an 82-year old norwegian-american Ellef Pedersen, it's a year off, but I believe it says something along the lines that this Ellef lived alone for the past 27 years in a small place "Staldene" in Holleia, not sure where that is, but seemed to have burned down. 5 years before that I think he lived in a place called Kovenholtet" apparently near Lundteig and Krødsherad. In any case, maybe that explains why there are no records for him, at least from around 1909/1912 to 1939.

The way Ellef is abbreviated here as "Ellef P Nymoen" makes me more confident that the Gunder P Nymoen is my Gunder. I am not sure, if you are able to find an 1885 Minnesota Census for him. I was unable to find it and neither did I find a Newspaper Article.

Here is again the Find a Grave, also posted a few land purchases in regards to Gunder: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/128704438/gunder-p-nymoen

Above I posted a few entries in regards to Andreas/Andrew E. Halkinrud, but did not see Gunder with him.
