As you are probably aware from your earlier posts on this site, informant on passengers traveling from the New York to Norway in 1919 is not easily found,. There are some cases when the use of new AI technology  can be helpful and perhaps this is one of them. I have asked the Google Gemini AI some questions about the conditions of travel from New York to Norway in 1919 and have pulled this information from its response. Sorry to have write in English but the length of the response and the detail of the response easily defeated my basic Norwegian.

In 1919, the SS Stavangerfjord was the flagship of the Norwegian America Line (Den Norske Amerikalinje), having just entered service the previous year. It served as a vital link for mail, cargo, and thousands of Norwegian emigrants traveling to the United States.

Crossing Time

For a steamship of its class in the post-WWI era, the Stavangerfjord was reliable but not built for record-breaking speed.

  • Duration: The crossing from Norway to New York generally took 9 to 10 days.

Turnaround and Return

The "turnaround" refers to the time the ship spent in New York harbor unloading passengers/cargo, cleaning, refueling (with coal in 1919), and re-provisioning before the return voyage.

  • Turnaround Time: The ship typically spent 7 to 10 days in port at New York.

  • Total Round Trip: A full cycle (leaving Norway, staying in NY, and returning to Norway) took approximately 4 to 5 weeks.

  • Example Schedule: If the ship arrived in New York on April 20th, it would usually be scheduled to depart for Norway again around April 28th or 30th.

Historical Note: In 1919, the Stavangerfjord was still a coal-burning ship. The turnaround time was slightly longer than it would be after 1924, when the ship was converted to oil, which allowed for much faster refueling.

In 1919, the SS Stavangerfjord followed a strict monthly rotation. Because the Norwegian America Line (NAL) only had two primary liners in service at that time—the Stavangerfjord and the Bergensfjord—they staggered their departures to ensure a ship left for Norway roughly every two to three weeks.

October 1919 Departure

According to the 1919 sailing schedules and voyage records for the Norwegian America Line:

  • Estimated Departure Date: The Stavangerfjord departed New York for Norway on or about October 28, 1919.

  • Context: She had arrived in New York on October 18, 1919, following a 10-day crossing from Kristiania (Oslo). After the standard 10-day turnaround at Pier 4 in Brooklyn to unload cargo and refuel, she began her return voyage in the final days of the month.

  • Arrival in Norway: This specific voyage would have reached Bergen around November 6–7, 1919, and concluded in Kristiania (Oslo) by November 9, 1919.

Other 1919 Departure Dates (from New York)

To give you a sense of the ship's rhythm that year, here were her other primary departure dates from New York back to Norway:

Departure from New York Previous Arrival in NY
April 30, 1919 April 20, 1919
June 24, 1919 June 14, 1919
August 19, 1919 August 9, 1919
October 28, 1919 October 18, 1919
December 23, 1919 December 13, 1919

Jeg håper denne informasjonen er verdifull for deg i søket etter din families historie.

For further information I did ask the Gemini AI for information specifically on a Marianne  (MARIE) Haraldsen. Its reply was this

Specific records for Marianne (Marie) Haraldsen on the Stavangerfjord in late 1919 are consistent with the ship's established schedule and the documentation practices of the era.

Departure and Voyage Details

  • Vessel: SS Stavangerfjord

  • Route: New York to Norway (specifically Kristiania/Oslo)

  • Departure Date: October 28, 1919

  • Departure Port: Pier 4, Brooklyn, New York

  • Arrival in Norway: Approximately November 7–9, 1919

Identifying the Manifest

In the fall of 1919, passengers like Marianne Haraldsen were recorded on specific manifests depending on their legal status.

  • U.S. Citizen List: If she had already obtained U.S. citizenship, she would appear on the "List of United States Citizens" departing New York. This list was simpler and usually only included her name, age, and local U.S. address.

  • Alien Manifest: if she was a Norwegian citizen returning home, she would be on the "List of Alien Passengers"(Form 630). This document is more detailed and often includes her last residence in the U.S. and her destination in Norway.

  • Return Records in Norway: Upon arrival in Kristiania or Bergen, she would likely be listed in the "Hjemkomne norsk-amerikanere" (Returned Norwegian-Americans) registers held by the Norwegian National Archives.

Findings for "Marie Haraldsen"

While "Marianne" is the formal name, many records from the Norwegian America Line for this period use "Marie."

  • A "Marie Haraldsen" is noted in genealogical records related to the Arendal/Southern Norway region around this time.

  • On the October 28, 1919, sailing, the Stavangerfjord carried many passengers returning to the Sørlandet region (including ports like Kristiansand and Arendal), as the ship made its first stop in Southern Norway before continuing to the capital.

Hei !

Mvh Marianne Brady
