Searching for information on Anna Marie (Mary) Anderson

Recommended Posts

Anna Marie (Mary) Anderson, my 2G grandmother, was born in Norway on 28 July 1845. Our family history does not have a place of birth, although a few online trees say that she was born in Stavanger. Mary emigrated to the United States in 1869. That same year she married Peder Larsen in LaSalle County, Illinois. Peder Larsen Fossum was born 21 January 1843 in Fossum - Flåtten, Soknedal, the son of Lars Eriksen Fossum and Guru Pedersdtr. Soknes.

With the kind help of others, we have a great deal of information on Peder’s ancestors going back to Ragnhild Olsdtr. Vinsnes, born about 1656 in Søg. Vinsnes, Singsås. Lars Erikson and Guru Pedersdtr. had eight children. Three of their sons remained in Norway. The other two sons settled in Wisconsin, as well as one of their daughters. Another daughter went to Minnesota. And Peder (also referred to as Peter Larson) eventually settled in Iowa.

In 1874, Peter and Mary settled for a brief time on a rented farm in Adams County, Iowa. They purchased a farm in Victoria Twp., Cass County, Iowa in 1875. They had nine children- two boys and seven girls.

I have a picture (date unknown) that is possibly that of Mary Anderson’s brother’s family. It was taken in Lake Mills, Winnebago County, Iowa near the border with Minnesota.

Einar Larson Fossum (Tornes) was born 17 Jun 1889 Harstad, Lenvik kommune, Troms fylke, Norway died11 Oct 1918. Einar was killed in action in des Ardennes, Champagne-Ardenne, France. He was with the 307th Engineer Regiment, 82nd Infantry Division and registered for the draft in Clay County, Minnesota. Einar was the son of John Larsen Fossum (John was a brother of Peder Larsen) and Hensine Eriksen Seljestad. Einar sister Borghild Larson Fossum Wissler was appointed the executor of his estate.

I include Einar’s information only because of the northern Iowa and Minnesota correlation. So far, I have been unable to make any connection with Mary Anderson. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for taking the time to review this.  Edward Campbell- Starksboro, Vermont US

Here is a useful link showing her gravestone, supporting that she may have been born 28 July 1845

And here she is in the 1900 census in Iowa

I cannot find any valid reference to her birth in Stavanger from the US sources, but if the birthdate is correct, there is a possible candidate from Brunlanes, Vestfold: Anne Marie, daughter of Johan Andersen Meløe and Caroline Olsdatter

No 38

This still needs to be supported by additional sources

The Tree associated with this Mary Larsen seems to be not quite initially believable?

No, the suggested baptism in Stavanger cannot be correct.

Could be just a coincidence but there is a Petter Larsen directly above a Marie Andersdatter  in the passenger list for the Monsoon arrival in August?
