Bygdebøker for Hol, Modum, Buskerud 1800- 1869

Recommended Posts

Looking for Bygdebøker information on the ancestors of Mari Johnsdatter, born 1804, in Hol(s).  Her family may have been associated with the Sjørpo farm.  Mari married Anders Larsen 20 Sept 1822.  It appears they lived in Heggen parish, Modum from 1822 to 1826.  They moved from Modum back to Hol (Wahs Eie or vass eie) in 1826.

Candidates for Mari's parents are Anne Pedersdatter and John Olsen of the Hol or Ål area.  Another remote possibility are Sille Ericsdatter and John Olsen of Steenbro.

Would also like to confirm other children of Mari Johnsdatter and Anders Larsen, in addition to their daughter Anna Marie Andersdatter (B. 29 July 1845).  Anna Marie emigrated to America in March, 1869 aboard the Monsoon out of Kragero.

Looking at the responses, it would appear that we  did not get very far back in history on the ancestors of Mari Johnsdatter. The problem is that we were not able to take her family tree back far enough in time. The bygdebok are farm history books and are usually focused on the owners of the farms. At a point in time Norway ran out of farmable land that young couples could buy. I notice that Roy-Petter mentioned Husmann. So young men ended up not purchasing  a section of farm land  but ended up leasing or renting  a small piece of land. This is a description;tion from a Norwegian Dictionary that might explain the process.

husmann                 cottager, tenant farmer, crofter, smallholder,
                        person who rented a house
with or without a small plot of land on larger farm.
Rent was paid by doing part time work for the farmer.

So the bygdebok would have a section on a farm and could easily never mention the Husmann renting or leasing a section of the land.  The bygdebok would talk about the owner and his family. If the farm changed hands the bygdebok would in many instances then discuss the new owner and his family.

I was a little surprised that you did not ask about the husband of Mari, Anders Olsen. You might want to investigate his ancestors as it seemed to me in my initial look that his family went back to the early 1700's on the Fure Farm in Modum.

My guess is that we might be able to connect your Anders Larsen to Johannes Larsen Fure
